On March 20, students and lecturers of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics hosted Areg Mikaelyan, Director of the V. Hambardzumian Observatory of the RA National Academy of Sciences.
During the lecture entitled “Challenges in Modern Astronomy” Areg Mikaelyan spoke about the development of astronomy in Armenia and presented facts confirming that the history of astronomy dates back to ancient times. The guest speaker also referred to the constellations, the difficult task of reconciling the lunar and solar calendars and said it requires a lot of effort.
"It is very important in astronomy to reason and to connect phenomena to one another,” he said. Mr. Mikaelyan also spoke about the link between physics and astronomy. The Canary Islands, Southern Chile and Hawaii remain the favored sites for research, he added.
“Astronomy is one of the international sciences,” Mr. Mikaelyan said. At the end of the meeting he answered the questions of the audience.
