An inter-university debating competition organized by the Student Council of Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) was held at the University on May 2.
“The event has brought together students from eight Armenian universities. The goal is to create a student platform for collaboration and get students to help and share and be useful to each other with different ideas, regardless of the format of the competition," said Chairman of the Student Council Paruyr Galstyan.
Today, the teams of ASPU and Yerevan State University (YSU) faced off in the debate on the theme "Democracy as a Form of Government is Justified." As the organizers of the competition said later discussions on the topic never stop neither in academic and political circles, nor in public.
They hope the game-competition will create an opportunity to witness a reasoned and constructive debate, which will stimulate the participants' critical thinking and improve their public speaking skills.
"For" and "Against" teams, introduction of the teams, interpretation of the debate topic, definition of key concepts, presentation of viewpoints and claims, recording and arguing facts supporting those claims: in the first stage, the teams defined the topic and provided supporting claims.
In the second, question-and-answer phase, the teams were to demonstrate analytical thinking: to check the "Against" team's knowledge of a certain piece of information through targeted questions, to ask for clarification from the opposing team about the latter's position, as well as to put the rival team in a tight spot.
The teams were evaluated by a professional jury represented by Hayk Grigoryan, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of History and Social Sciences, and Hayk Sukiasyan, Head of the Chair of Social Science. The team of ASPU received 56 points and the team of YSU - 57.75 points. In the long run, the latter was named winner after a heated debate.
