ASPU Rector meets principals of schools conducting internships

On October 11, ASPU Rector Ruben Mirzakhanyan had a meeting with principals of the schools that organize and conduct student internships.

The rector expressed his gratitude for the cooperation and expressed hope that during the meeting they would discuss [as partners] suggestions and observations of organizing internships in an attempt to review and correct the drawbacks and have more tangible and positive results.

Ruben Mirzakhanyan once again stated that the University attaches great importance to internship and spoke about the latest achievements of the University, specifically the fact that ASPU’s WISDOM periodical was included in Web of Science (WoS) - a leading scientific citation search and analytical information platform, the creation of the first textbook on inclusive education which was developed in collaboration with the University of Minnesota.

“An international cooperation will not work if we do not take into consideration our national peculiarities and situation,” Ruben Mirzakhanyan said. He then spoke about the opportunities to study and do an internship in partner universities while studying at ASPU. The ASPU rector also spoke presented the joint internship programme implemented by students of ASPU’s Faculty of Art Education and Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK).

The school principals noted with regret that interest in teaching has declined markedly and it sometimes becomes an obstacle in recruiting qualified specialists. The principals assured the ASPU rector that they need form masters in primary schools, teachers of informatics and mathematics, psychologists, and speech therapists. The reason is the low salary in schools.

“There are no closed doors in our schools for interns,” they said when speaking about the problems of organizing internships in schools.

Later on, the principals referred to the level of preparedness of ASPU students and said that in some cases the knowledge of pedagogical methods is weak as compared with in-depth knowledge of profession. During the meeting, the guests also stressed the need of organizing teacher training at ASPU which will further strengthen the university-school feedback. The principals suggested organizing summer schools and summer camps together with ASPU primary and high schools and involving their schoolchildren [as beginner researchers] at conferences to be held as ASPU.

Mr. Mirzakhanyan reiterated the University's commitment to cooperate with the schools and expressed hope for the continuation of effective cooperation with the aim of providing students with the best career guidance, improving student internships and hiring qualified specialists in schools.
