“Chess” Scientific Research Institute participates in international conference

The team of the “Chess” Scientific Research Institute of Armenian State Pedagogical University participated in a chess conference held in London earlier in December.

The aim of the annual conference, which was first held in 2013, is to summarize the achievements in chess worldwide.

The Armenian team, which was participating in the conference online, presented the results of its research. Vahan Sargsyan, a representative of the “Chess” Scientific Research Institute, presented the educational, psychological and sociological directions of the research. While submitting the results of the psychological research, he stressed that the level of voluntary attention and other cognitive processes improves during chess lessons.

Vahan Sargsyan also presented the attitude of parents and children to Chess as a subject. The aim of the study was to understand and reveal the attitude of elementary schoolchildren and their parents towards Chess as a mandatory school subject and reveal the needs (difficulties) of juniors.

The team also presented the results of the research carried out by the educational group, the dual-component model of chess capabilities as well as the results of the study of chess capacities of 172 pupils of 2-4 grades with that model.

The participants of the conference expressed interest in the volume and frequency of the research, adding that they may be considered as a direction of future possible cooperation.

Smbat Lputyan, Head of the Chair of Chess and Sports and Director of the “Chess” Scientific Research Institute, underlined that Armenia, as one of the first countries with experience in chess and a big player in world chess, will try to assist the participating countries interested in further cooperation in organizational, methodological and other issues while introducing chess as a school subject.
