Current issues in Pedagogical Sciences discussed during conference

The second edition of the conference "Problems and Prospects of Development of Modern Pedagogical Education" organized jointly by Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU), Academy of Pedagogical and Psychological Sciences of Armenia, and Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University (RAU) was held on February 5.

The conference aimed to identify and discuss the problems and development trends in and university pedagogy and peculiarities of private methods.

ASPU Rector Srbuhi Gevorgyan said this year the conference is dedicated to natural sciences; the Academy has singled out the most important issues in education, teaching, and methods, which are related to the problems faced by the country's educational system, particularly the general education sector.

She voiced hope that the reports will address the requirements of the state standard of general education and curricula content, the homogeneity of strategic issues in the school-university and education sectors, interdisciplinarity and the interaction and methods of their research, which give rise to numerous problematic situations.

Edward Sandoyan, Rector of the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University, said in turn that serious changes are taking place in the world, which are conditioned by the technological revolution. He added that if we don’t change our attitude towards pedagogy, particularly Natural Science Education, Armenia will lag behind those developments not by a few years, but by several hundred decades. Studies show that few young people are ready to choose the teaching of Natural Sciences as a career; teaching in schools is not profitable nowadays.

In that context, Edward Sandoyan sees a serious danger: if we are unable to organize education in schools with modern technologies, latest methods, and knowledge, it will be impossible to avoid problems in the future. He says the ultimate goal for every Armenian should be to stop and direct all resources towards school, pedagogy, and education, especially in the field of natural sciences.

Unlike Sandoyan, Eduard Ghazaryan, President of the Academy of Pedagogical and Psychological Sciences of Armenia, believes that interest in natural sciences is growing among young people and we should keep working in that direction. He added that in comparison with the past, today teachers choose their own paths and methods, whereas there should be a systematic approach to teaching.

In his speech, the academician emphasized the importance of university pedagogy, which is pushed into the background year by year. He said it is due to the development of high technologies in the 21st century and emergence of a number of new directions, and, in that context, stressed the importance of studying the quantum theory of solids and presented its methods and content.

During the plenary session, reports mostly focused on the development of learners' scientific thinking while teaching chemistry, as well as on the development of logical and associative thinking.

Later on, speakers dwelt on the specifics of using private methods in teaching physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, and geography. Representatives of various scientific and educational institutions presented their research papers and studies, laying emphasis on a number of sectoral issues.
