Davit Gyurjinayan was Elected as the Chairman of the Pedagogical University Academic Board

The Pedagogical University Academic Board session took place. The first issue on the agenda was the election of the Academic Board Chairman, where the RA Ministry of Education and Science Language Committee nominated the candidacy of Davit Gyurjinyan.

The only candidate nominated for an open ballot Mr. Davit Gyurjinyan was unanimously elected as the Chairman of the ASPU Academic Board. By the nomination of the Board members, the position of the Board Secretary was assumed by the ASPU first year MA student of the Faculty of Education Psychology and Sociology Angela Gabrielyan.

The newly appointed Chairman of the Board expressed acknowledgements for being chosen for that responsible post and presented to the members his biography and scientific-pedagogical practice, proudly stating that he was also holding the ASPU seal as its graduate.

“I have continuously maintained connection with my native University within the scope of presidency over various initiatives, conferences and graduate examinations. It is a prestigious University and now, after 39 years I have the honour of being the Chairman of its Academic Board; now I will try to “pay off my debts”, mentioned Davit Gyurjinyan and expressed his hope that the Board sessions, as well as meetings with the students, lecturers and the management would be of regular nature, in order to best implement the mission of the University.

His colleagues of various years shared their opinions about the Chairman of the Board, where Davit Gyurjinyan’s scientific, pedagogical activity was highly appreciated along with his great contribution not only in formative semantics, but also in a number of troubling issues referring to the secondary education system.

“Davit Gyurjinyan’s presence and role in this important structure is in full harmony with the University’s good name and mission”, noted the Board member, the Head of the ASPU TV-Radio Journalism Levon Galstyan.

In his turn, the Rector of the Pedagogical University Rouben Mirzakhanyan also congratulated the newly elected Board Chairman Davit Gyurjinyan and assured that it was a great pleasure to see him – the prominent scientist and the graduate of the ASPU on such a responsible post. Once again the Rector stated that Davit Gyurjinyan enjoyed good reputation among his friends and expressed his hope to see more tangible achievements in the result of the collaborative work.
Further on, the members of the Board watched a video about the activities held at the University during the 2018, after which the APSU Rector referred to the implemented work in terms of the number of students, and the revenue and expenses comparison.

Reconsideration of the tuition fees, lecturers’ workload, employees’ medical insurance, expanding the scope of international cooperation, financial savings, etc; in line with these and other matters Rector Rouben Mirzakhanyan spoke about reconstruction of campuses, renovation work, looking forward to thereby contributing to the solution of the important issue of providing accommodation for the foreign applicants.

The member of the Board, who had already got familiarised with the 2018 report in advance, asked the Rector their questions. Specifically, the RA Deputy Minister of ES Arevik Anapiosyan enquired about the outcomes of international cooperation, in response to which the Rector shared with a number of achievements, starting from the inclusion of the “Imastutyun” [Wisdom] journal in the international scientific database in particular, as well as the review of the curricula resulting from the cooperation with the University of Oulu.

Likewise, the Board members were interested in the activities held by the ASPU in regards with employment of its graduates at schools, reconsideration of internships, and the issue of forming a new model, so that it does not just carried formal nature, but also had serious role in the educating future pedagogues.

Furthermore, there were questions about the organization of distant –learning courses, increase of tuition fees and their risks, as well as the activities conducted by the University in terms of involving more international applicants. Rector Rouben Mirzakhanyan assured the Board members that the increase had been made exceptionally based on serious studies, especially taking into account the fact that the tuition fees of the Pedagogical University had not been increased in the previous eight years. Besides, speaking about the actions aimed at attracting more foreign applicants, the Rector highlighted that there were a lot of issues in that task, but gradual steps were being taken to accomplish it, starting from the translation of the curricula.

The members of the Board agreed that there was a lot to do in the sphere of pedagogy, and expressed their willingness to have sessions and meetings on regular basis to discuss the activities to be conducted in regards with the realisation of the important state objective of having good pupils, and good teachers.

At the end of the session, the ASPU Academic Board assessed the implementation of the 2018 activities as satisfactory as well as approved the 2019 primary annual estimate of revenues and expenditures, the anti-corruption strategy and the 2018 anti-corruption strategy implementation report.
