ASPU PhD Student Wins in an Experimental Competition

The applicant of the Faculty of History and Social Science Chair of History of Armenia Ruzanna Sargsyan took the first honorary place in the experimental competition "The most influential Armenian of the last 300 years" of the Lebanese "Option 21" magazine and received a monetary prize.

The magazine “Option 21” was established by the financial support of the Armenian Communities Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to develop Armenian public writing, literature, journalism and scientific mind with innovative spirit and in cooperation with writers, publicists, artists, and professionals from other fields.

The jury of the competition consisted of Dr. Elke Hartmann, Institute for Ottoman Studies and Turkic Studies of the Freie Universität Berlin, Professor of the University of Columbia Nanor Gpranyan, Doctor of History, Founding Director of the Berlin “Book of Remembrance” Vahe Tashchyan.

“It was difficult to select the most influential amongst many devoted Armenians. Taking into account the active involvement of male figures in the given historical period, I decided to study influential Armenian women: I selected an active, purposeful, strong and exemplary Armenian woman - Zabel Yesayan. In my article “Zabel Yesayan the most influential Armenian of the recent 300 years” I introduced the collective image of an Armenian woman cumulated in Zabel Yesayan”, Ruzanna Sargsyan mentioned in her interview to the aspu.am.

The latter also added that the recent 300 years of history of Armenia had been hard, fatal, and full of many challenges. Considering the peculiarities of value system of Armenian society in the given period of time, it took a strong will, spirit and ingenuity for an Armenian woman to engage in political and social activities, especially, when the matters of life and security of thousands of orphans having escaped from the Genocide, were still urgent and actual.

Ruzanna Sargsyan also noticed that the writer, public-political figure Zabel Yesayan had selflessly dedicated her life to that duty and not only.

Furthermore, the ASPU PhD student outlined that Zabel Yesayan was presented in the American Refinery29 website as one of the groundbreaking women in the history of mankind. She was a purposeful and exemplary woman, which was in fact dangerous during those days.

You may find the complete article in “Option21” magazine.
