Members of the ASPU Trade Union hosted representatives of the Service Employees International Union, one of the largest public sector unions in California.
Shushan Baghbudarian, Worksite Organizer at SEIU Local 721 which is part of the Service Employees International Union, Steve Hovagimian, a member of the Executive Board, the governing body of SEIU Local 721, and Silva Keshishian, Social worker of the Company, stressed the importance of the Union’s activity saying that it wants to create favourable conditions for the Armenian community.
They believe that bridges should be built between trade unions and the Government to start joint productive work.
“Our power lies in our collective strength,” Shushan Baghbudarian said adding that that unity helps them participate in various demonstrations and achieve victory.
The guests expressed desire to spread their experience in Armenia as well by organizing workshops and giving tips for protecting the interests of employees in the Homeland.
Social worker Silva Keshishian introduced the programmes implemented by the Union and stressed that most of them are aimed at uniting Armenian officials and giving them the necessary instructions and recommendations to enable them to advance to higher positions.
“I was born in Syria but my heart and soul are in Armenia. I often visit Armenia and learn a lot of things here,” said Steve Hovagimian. He assured everyone that he has a great desire to support and cooperate and even work at Armenian State Pedagogical University.
He added that he continues to admire Armenians’ longing for education. The members of the structure which has over 3 million members say ‘unity is power.’
Hasmik Sargsyan, Chair of the Trade Union of Armenian State Pedagogical University, spoke about the activities of the structure that she heads saying that in their work they are guided by the mottos ‘for the benefit of employees’ interests’ and ‘solidarity.’
ASPU representatives thanked the guests for the visit, their pro-Armenian activities in the United States, highly appreciating the activities of their Armenian-American colleagues.
The group arrived in Armenia to participate in the Sixth Armenia-Diaspora Conference. They also visited the ASPU Museum of History and got acquainted with the University’s history and important events.
