An international scientific and practical conference initiated by the Chair of Foreign Literature of Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) was held on November 18.
The conference held for the 17th time in online and face-to-face formats brought together lecturers and MA students from leading universities in Armenia, Russia, and Ukraine.
Tigran Mikaelyan, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages at ASPU, emphasized the importance of the traditional conference, hailing the fact that interest in literary texts and Russian literature has not faded away.
Tigran Mikaelyan had reviewed the conference materials in advance. He stressed that the topics were interesting and educational. He highly appreciated the initiative of the Chair of Foreign Literature: although the Chair is still young (it opened 24 years ago) it has highly qualified specialist staff and well-established traditions, the best proof of which is the conference.
The conference focused on various issues in world literature, historical aspects, literary connections and problems of translation. While analyzing those issues, the authors also cited previously unpublished texts.
Mariam Ispiryan, ASPU Vice-Rector for Education and Science, also underscored the importance of the conference in the scientific and educational life of the University. She also stressed the fact that Armenian and foreign specialists and students have raised a number of issues in literature. She says the collection is distinguished by its scholarly value: they should become known not only to literary critics, but also to all those who are interested in Modern Literary Studies.
"The education sector is undergoing serious changes. We, teachers, must use new methods to enable students to maintain and deepen their interest in the Russian Language and Literature,” the vice-rector said. She said it was no accident that the conference was held at the “Pushkin Institute” Russian Language Teaching and Testing Center which values the past, present, and future of both countries in question (i.e., Armenia and Russia).
Ruzanna Tadevosyan, Head of the Chair of Foreign Literature, reflected on the first years of the conference and said that over time, they had switched from publishing articles to publishing separate collections, first including Armenian and later foreign colleagues.
She stressed the importance of the titles "First Steps in Science" and "Pages of Poetry." The first one gives students the opportunity to try their abilities in science, while the second one enables them to translate the works of famous people.
Let us add that this time the collection featured the poems of Bulat Okudzhava, a Soviet and Russian poet, writer, musician, novelist, and singer-songwriter of Georgian-Armenian ancestry, whose 100th anniversary is celebrated this year.
The speeches were followed by discussions and a Q&A session.
