"Journalism is a profession the main target of which is to have a smart, intelligent person; you try not to develop technologies, but to develop a human being, an individual with your words, moral norms and ideas. When you choose the career of a journalist, you take on almost the same mission as a teacher, i.e., to educate the public and impart important values,” Artur Baghdasaryan, Associate Professor at the Chair of Television and Radio Journalism of Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) said on September 18 during a meeting with pupils of the ASPU Base College.
During the meeting with children studying in the stream of Journalism, the Candidate of Pedagogic Sciences, who has been teaching at ASPU for more than 25 years, spoke about one of the oldest professions in the world and reminded that journalism is partly a creative art, a craft and a profession.
Artur Baghdasaryan confessed that there is some negative attitude towards journalism as a profession which has both objective and subjective reasons, but we should remember that journalists, as representatives of the fourth power, do not protect their own interests, but perform a ‘watchdog function.’ “No matter how much they try to discredit and devalue journalism, for every society it has the role of a doctor and an educator that also shapes people. The development of information technology has led to the fact that nowadays every citizen ‘is engaged in’ journalism; today journalism has changed its main direction. Perhaps that is the reason why accurate reporting is no longer top priority for journalists. For them, creating meaning and content are more challenging," said Artur Baghdasaryan.
He then spoke about professions that “are dying" due to scientific and technological progress, school-educator-education triangle, peculiarities of teaching journalism at ASPU, prospects of professional activity of journalists who have graduated from ASPU.
The specialist who has worked in the field is sure that journalism offers a promising career and in the future journalism will set the bar high in terms of content, ideas and meaning. "Real value cannot fall, it always rises,” he stressed.
Artur Baghdasaryan also spoke about his education and choice of profession. It is an honour to work at ASPU for the lecturer who graduated from ASPU and studied in the theater-studio of cinema artists after Henrik Malyan.
He confessed that he has been able to overcome the disappointments and difficulties he has encountered in his life thanks to his favorite profession. Mr. Baghdasaryan hopes that the pupils will also receive a good education in the college that will lead to self-realization.
