First graders of the “Zangakner” (Bells) class of Basic School #57 of Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) already know and recognize the letters of the Armenian alphabet. The farewell to the alphabet was marked by a beautiful and memorable celebration turning the event into a real fairy tale.
However, the important and long-awaited day was full of unexpected challenges for the little ones; they were the heroes of the play "The Stolen Letters.”
The king, who thinks he is the most powerful man, with vast lands and a treasury full of gold, is surprised to hear a voice from afar: "You are a mosquito, just a mosquito, who considers a literate person to be his enemy, who wants to take away the most precious and cherished thing - the letters. With my light I will burn and defeat the darkness that tortures this nation."
The king, who has forbidden his wise men to be literate and educated, decides to get rid of them for acting against his will and wanting to learn and develop. The boastful and illiterate king sends his servants to the forest to find some sleeping pills and threatens to punish them severely if they return empty-handed.
It was then that the courtiers show up and decide to find a way to ‘take the people out of the darkness.’ The forester decides to help the servants in the forest by telling the king that they should fight and save the country only with letters.
But the king decides to lock the letter in an iron box and send the wise men to prison. The courtiers continue to struggle for the letters. After overcoming numerous trials, with the help of mice and dwarves, they are able, with the support of the Prince, to kill the three-headed dragon guarding the box, free the letters, and enlighten the country. “The letters are our weapon and armor of self-defense, they are the pride of our nation, the guarantee of our existence, they are our identity that have saved our people from destruction and granted immortality," the children said on the stage.
The king, who learned a good lesson from what had happened, asks the principal of Basic School #57 to admit him to school, promising to study well, serve the people and light their path.
Principal Naira Toghanyan thanked class teacher Agrafina Hovhannisyan for giving our nation another literate generation and taking the audience to the magic kingdom of letters and enlightenment. She highlighted the importance of the event which once again focused on and emphasized the need for knowledge and literacy.
