Mathematics Education: ASPU Hosts International Conference

On October 7, an international conference entitled "Mathematics Education" started at ASPU. The  two-day conference is attended by representatives of a number of universities from Armenia, Artsakh and Russia, as well as teachers from different schools.

ASPU Acting Rector Ashot Khoetsyan greeted the conference participants and wished them fruitful work, at the same time hailing the participation of representatives of international partner universities in the conference.

The professor especially emphasized the importance of works in the field of physics and mathematics, given the fact that interest in natural sciences has significantly decreased in public.

"As a primary institution of preparing and training future teachers, the Pedagogical University should have a consistent attitude towards this phenomenon and prevent the tendency from deepening. Schools are waiting for teachers of physics, mathematics, biology, chemistry and geography. In these fields of science, the University has had serious traditions in the person of scientists who continue to teach at ASPU and present science in and outside the country,” he said adding that the conference has both educational and scientific significance considering the role of mathematics and its dissemination.

The international conference which is held for the 9th year in a row is initiated by Professor Hamlet Mikayelyan, PhD in Mathematical Sciences. He says thanks to the conference mathematics education is comprehensively valued from the point of view of teaching and upbringing.

"Valuable observations are made by local and foreign partners during the conference. I regret to say that we do not have the opportunity to involve a wider range of professionals,” the professor said wishing the participants effective work.

Many of the foreign participants presented their reports online. Academician Alexei Semenov of Moscow State University presented a report entitled "The Future of Mathematics Education". He stressed that ‘in the future the world will become more digitalized’ that ‘we should get used to that rhythm.’ “We know that mathematics is at the core of computer and digital technology. Schools will survive if they are able to overcomes the existing digital abyss with the surrounding world,” he emphasized.

The speaker also spoke about the goals of mathematics education and the current situation, focused on what we want to teach children, and stated that ‘we are still at a very low level to achieve the above-mentioned goals.’

The academician hailed the opportunities for children and teachers to use digital technologies during exams, spoke about introducing mathematics and informatics in elementary schools and the "Digital World" programme, and focused on the ways of effective education on the digital platform.

Professor Eduard Ghazaryan, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, also delivered a speech at the plenary session, presenting a report entitled "Certain Applications of Harmonic Series in Physics". In his speech, the latter emphasized the interdisciplinary link between physics and mathematics, noting that it is difficult to teach physics without mathematics, while the programme incompatibility causes a number of difficulties. Physicists try to overcome them using various tricks. At universities where they teach, together with mathematicians they are already drafting a special course - mathematics for physicists. He is sure that the cooperation will be mutually beneficial. The professor is sure that the cooperation will be mutually beneficial.

Vadim Grinshkun, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor of Moscow City Teachers’ Training University, is pleased that he is able to participate in the conference during such difficult times. Last time he visited ASPU 15 years ago, again to participate in a conference. In his speech, the professor stressed that the structure he heads tries to find an answer to the following question: how to teach given the use of latest technologies. The latter also referred to the digital tools needed for individual educational trajectories, hierarchical telecommunication resources of educational materials, and algorithm of designing educational materials.

Olga Zaslavskaya, a professor of the same university, also spoke about the interdisciplinary link between mathematics and informatics, explained how to choose the right tools and content considering the needs of the education system so that students can use those methods in the classroom or at home.

Doctor of Pedagogical Science Manuk Mkrtchyan also addressed the plenary session, presenting the topic “Mathematics as General Subject: Key Approaches and Implementation Issues.”

He noted that in his speeches delivered within the framework of the given international conference, he keeps pressing the idea that the content of mathematics and the way of organizing education should be radically changed. “There is no need for formal changes. It is necessary to change the purpose and methods, making the individual approach to the subject a necessary precondition, a mandatory principle. Children are different, they have their peculiarities, but they are all capable, and an individual approach must be developed to better their qualitative properties. When we speak about general education, we mean what should be mandatory for everyone, not according to their ability. It is here that we remember the thesis that knowledge and formulas are just opportunities, it is necessary to change the main component - the content.”

Manuk Mkrtchyan stressed the importance of organizing conferences of the same format and hailed the frequency (yearly) and significance of the mathematics conference where new views are presented and new ideas are born and the first beneficiary of which is the student.

Within the framework of the conference, the participants referred to the need of developing mathematical thinking in high schools, the relationship between thinking and inner speech during intellectual activity, the peculiarities of the value system of students majoring in natural sciences, mathematics and the humanities, etc.

The International conference will continue tomorrow.
