Modern Istanbul-Armenian literature discussed in Yerevan International Book Fest

ASPU’s Spyurq (Diaspora) Research Center recently participated in Yerevan International Book Fest 2023 which was held at the National Academic Theater named after Gabriel Sundukyan on May 25-27.
Within the framework of the festival, Director of the Spyurq (Diaspora) Research Center Suren Danielyan delivered a speech dedicated to the evolving Istanbul-Armenian literary movement, its characteristics and development trends.

In his speech, Professor Danielyan emphasized that the new literature, which emerged after the Second World War, became the continuation of the great literary movement in Istanbul which was interrupted in the 1910s, bringing with it an interesting combination of traditions and innovation and becoming a source of influence and inspiration for Eastern Armenian literary circles.

Professor Danielyan also spoke about prominent Istanbul-Armenian figures Zaven Biberyan, Roper Hattechian, Zahrat, Zareh Khrakhuni, Mkrtich Markosyan, Igna Saryaslan and others.

Knarik Abrahamyan, a researcher at the Spyurq Research Center and the meeting host, stressed that for decades Istanbul-Armenian literature has been a field of scientific interest for Professor Danielyan and the structure he heads. As evidence of that she cited the dozens of explanatory and art books published in Armenia and Istanbul with the participation and/or initiative of the Center.

“The latest one in the series is a collection of materials of the conference entitled “Istanbul-Armenian Literature from the Middle of the Twentieth Century to Our Days” published under the auspices the Hamazkayin Armenian Educational and Cultural Association Yerevan Office,” she said.

The organizers of the festival assured the attendees that during the festival Professor Danielyan's reference to one of the most remarkable phenomena of Armenian literature is an important step towards popularizing Istanbul-Armenian literature.

Let us add that the Spyurq Research Center participated in the Yerevan International Book Fest for the third year in a row.
