New approaches to social rehabilitation of persons with disabilities

On October 5, students and lecturers of the Faculty of Special Education hosted Oleg Kolpashchikov, President of the White Cane NGO, and Johannes Schmidt, a teacher working with children with mental retardation (MR).

During the meeting, the guests presented their organization. They said they are looking for new approaches to social rehabilitation of persons with disabilities and aim to raise their participation in social and physical activities and sports, establish and expand their ties with "healthy" society, and gain economic and internal independence.

“It's a unique social initiative and its participants are people with different visual impairments as well as people with different types of disabilities, who acquire an indispensable experience of positive attitude towards life and full interaction with the outside world. They help each other find life in life, find decent work, discover their abilities and talents, and be useful to public," said Oleg Kolpashchikov, who is visually impaired.

The participants asked questions about disabled people in sports. It became clear that one of the most important principles of the organization is to actively cooperate with "healthy" people in all spheres of life, particularly in sports.

This is the second year representatives of the White Cane NGO have spent their training and rest on the shores of Lake Sevan.

During the discussion, the sides agreed to continue cooperation on elaboration and implementation of further steps.
