Opinion: One should make a conscious career decision

Every person makes a choice in life which becomes decisive and fatal for the rest of their life; it is the career choice. "Today, you are at an important juncture in your decision-making process where you have to decide on your future career," ASPU Vice-Rector for HR and International Cooperation Marianna Harutyunyan said during a meeting with about 300 schoolchildren at ASPU. The Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences says she has chosen her career herself and is happy with her choice. She stressed the importance of the right career choice for a person’s future life and progress.

On March 10, the ASPU Student Council organized an informative event to guide and assist students in choosing their future profession. During the meeting, the children were introduced to the ASPU structure, faculties and the specialties it offers.

Stressing that teaching is the most important profession, Marianna Harutyunyan emphasized the importance of a conscious choice. The role of teachers has changed. Today, a teacher is a researcher, a creator, and a performer. In that sense, teaching is a multi-faceted profession, and no other profession is so as capacious and meaningful. But you should love it and make a conscious choice,” the associate professor said.

Head of the Department for Educational Processes Management and Reforms Samvel Asatryan added in turn that teaching is a noble and primary profession, because teachers deal with future generations and build the country’s future. He had an interactive discussion which especially activated the children.

Anahit Panosyan, a specialist at the Center for International Cooperation and Project Management, presented the University’s international ties and the opportunities to study abroad. She particularly emphasized the knowledge of a foreign language. By her own example, she confirmed that it is possible to study at ASPU, at the same time studying in foreign universities under different programs.

Nona Khachatryan, Secretary of the ASPU Student Council, presented the specialties at ASPU, and Sona Khachatryan, a graduate of the University, held a seminar on media literacy. Hamlet Petrosyan, Vice-President of the Student Council, spoke about the advantages and disadvantages of the University, and Margarita Shahnazaryan, President of the ASPU Student Scientific Society, presented the importance of the structure she heads. The speeches were followed by a quiz game organized by the SSS which activated the pupils from marzes and Yerevan.

Garuna Yeranosyan, a specialist of the ASPU Internship Centre, presented the activity of the Centre.

Paruyr Galstyan, President of the ASPU Student Council and the organizer of the event, presented the activity, importance and functions of the Student Council, and Mariam Sargsyan explained why and how one can become a member of the Student Council.

During the meeting, PhD student Aren Alaverdyan delivered a special sign language lesson, teaching the children the famous song [by Armenian singer Forsh] “Yerevan is not a house and a building; Yerevan is us"  with sign language interpretation.

Madlen Minasyan activated the pupils again with an interesting quiz game. The winners of the game received presents.

"Such events and initiatives are extremely important for professional orientation. They will be organized regularly," Paruyr Galstyan said expressing his satisfaction with the results.

At the end of the event, the children learned national dances in the yard of the University.

Let us add that each faculty had its own ‘information table’ where children talked about the professions and topics they were interested in and received comprehensive information.
