Problems and challenges in Mathematics education discussed during international conference

A two-day international conference entitled "Mathematics Education-10" started at ASPU on October 6. The conference is attended by representatives of the education sector from Armenia and abroad.

Hamlet Mikayelyan, a professor of the Chair of Mathematics and its Teaching Methods, underscored the importance of the conference in the history of the 100-year-old university, stressing that during these 100 years the institution has educated and nurtured the most important specialists - teachers, who have passed on to next generations the most important educational and cultural heritage.

Hamlet Mikayelyan considered the main focus of the event to be an important component of civilization, assuring everyone that the reports will not dwell on "dry" mathematics, rather they will present science with its entire colour palette.

ASPU Rector Srbuhi Gevorgyan welcomed the participants of the traditional conference, saying that the University has always been faithful to its mission of training teachers, educating generations, transferring knowledge and forming the value system of a modern citizen.

In that context, she emphasized the role of mathematics – the queen of all sciences, not only from the perspective of forming and developing logic, but also from the point of developing student-teacher interactions, cooperating, laying the accent on the beautiful, forming its standards and transferring it. "The conference has a practical orientation in terms of arming the methodological basis of schools, pupils and the teaching community,” Srbuhi Gevorgyan said.

In his report, Alexey Semyonov, a mathematician and academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, focused on the significance and values of early mathematics education.

The famous scientist spoke about the problems that teachers face today, the value of the educational product in the world, consideration of values as a motivation in learning, as well as the importance of the process of teaching and learning together in the education.

Independent discoveries and inventions, solving problems that we "don't know how to solve", that we "haven't had clues to"… academician Semyonov says mathematics is the most natural field for such kind of education, and that is the value of mathematics as a discipline in the modern school.

Manuk Mkrtchyan, a professor of the Chair of Mathematics and its Teaching Methods, delivered a report on “Issues in Education in the Context of Modern Phenomena of Socio-cultural Reality".

The speaker first referred to modern socio-cultural realities, then presented the problems and challenges in general education.

Professor Hamlet Mikayelyan presented a report on "Psychological Safety in the Conditions of Value-oriented Educations and Informatization of Mathematics Education".

In his speech, he dwelt on the four main categories: psychological safety, value or value-oriented education, digitization or informatization, mathematics teaching process.

Speaking about inclusive education, Mr. Mikayelyan noted with regret that the mathematics education does not have great potential from the point of view of inclusion; even specialists do not talk about the material outside the classroom.

The professor thinks it is a serious problem that no one cares about a number of issues, including ‘how to learn mathematics and read textbooks.’

Mr. Mikayelyan says it is important that a pupil propose something new or discover something new together with the teacher. “The objective of the educational process is to learn and to achieve that purpose one needs to be guided by the well-known pedagogical principle of "learning to learn" he added.

In their reports, the participants of the conference addressed a number of problems in the field, presenting also the international practice of training mathematics teachers.

The conference will continue on Friday- October 7.
