Public lecture series by Russian specialists

A group of leading specialists from Russia are at Armenian State Pedagogical University for a two-day visit. They arrived in Armenia at the invitation of the Chair of Sociology and Social Work, Faculty of Education Psychology and Sociology.

On the first day of the visit, the guests met with the teaching staff of the University. The Armenian and Russian specialists discussed possible avenues for further cooperation and outlined their next steps.

The sides stressed the importance of exchange programmes for students and lecturers, organization of joint research, establishment of research laboratories, as well as publication of articles in leading scinetific journals.

According to an initial agreement, ASPU lecturers will have an opportunity to take training courses in Russian universities whereas professors from Russian institutions will deliver public lectures at the ASPU.

Professor Stanislav Boyko from the Cherepovets Branch of the Saint Petersburg State University of Economics, who is also the editor-in-chief of “Scientific Thought” journal, said in his speech that the start of future cooperation was already announced: eleven students of Armenian State Pedagogical University recently had their articles published in the prestigious journal.

Irina Simonova, Professor at the Saint Petersburg State University of Economics, said she had had an opportunity to work with ASPU students within the framework of Summer School courses. “You have wonderful, interesting, educated and talented students. I am sure that our students have a lot to learn from one another,” she said.

Prof. Armen Sahakyan, Head of the ASPU Chair of Sociology and Social Work who is a graduate of the Saint Petersburg State University of Economics, beleives that cooperation will be productive. He has come a long way with the visiting lecturers and says they are leading specialists in their spheres. Besides, both sides have a strong desire to deepen cooperation. “We have held many discussions and heard numerous proposals. The important thing is to realize them in practice and enable students to acquire experience and develop their professional skills.”

Ruzanna Petrosyan, Dean of the Faculty of Education Psychology and Sociology, stressed the importance of the initiative of the newly-appointed head of the Chair which aimed to provide exchange of ideas with Russian colleagues and deepen cooperation between the two sides. Tatiana Guzhavina from the Institute of Economics and Social Research and Professor Kajik Ohanyan from the St. Petersburg State University of Economics presented their vision on cooperation.

The latter stressed that cooperation built within the framework of an agreement with the ASPU had already yielded tangible results.

Professor Sergei Bistryantsov from the same university confessed that he likes Armenia. To prove the truth of his words, he expressed his love for the country in Armenian.

Later on, the guests toured the ASPU Museum and gave public lectures at the University.

Professor Kajik Ohanyan delivered a lecture on “Theoretical Concepts of Intellectual Capital,” Professor Stanislav Boyko gave a lecture on "Sociology in the World of Science: Development Perspectives,” while Prof. Sergei Bistryantsov spoke about trust as a signal of a social norm.

ASPU Vice-Rector Srbuhi Gevorgyan expressed confidence that the future cooperation between the institutions of higher education would be effective. She added that the topics of public lectures were comprehensive and touched upon various issues in Social Science. “Armenian State Pedagogical University attaches great importance to Sociology as a science and takes into account the rapidly changing sociological theory and its development trends in the world,” she said.

ASPU Vice-Rector Ara Yeremyan added in turn that the cooperation marked a new beginning for re-organizing the scientific life in a new way.
The public lecture series will continue on April 20.
