“Science proves that the planet is becoming destabilised, disasters are growing”

The ASPU Centre for University-Employer Cooperation and the UN Public Relations Department jointly organized the United Nations forum about the Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030.

The Vice-Rector of the Pedagogical University Ara Yeremyan highlighted the importance of organizing the event and the cooperation outlining that education has strategic meaning for different countries thereby conditioning the power of the state, its presentation in the scope of international relations and the effectiveness of activities aimed at sustainable development.

The Head of the Centre of University-Employer Cooperation Rita Gevorgyan, in her turn, expressed hope that the given initiatives would have continuous nature and the organization of a joint forum will give the opportunity to pass necessary information on to students, thus, contributing to sustainable development.

In addition, the Head of the UN Public Relations Department ensured that the topic was directly connected to the United Nations sustainable development objectives.

The ASPU Head of the Chair of Ecology and Sustainable Development, Professor Karine Danielyan introduced the world processes of sustainable development and the interconnected objectives thereof, assuring that if in the past many people considered the concerns of the environmentalists ungrounded, currently science proves that the planet is destabilizing, and disasters are growing.

“We have come to a phase when the planet is estranging us from itself; humanity is in struggle against nature”, mentioned the Professor, adding that according to the information from the UN, economically underdeveloped countries were less vulnerable as they were not ready for the changes.

Furthermore, Karine Danielyan discussed the efforts of the modern civilization to come out of the global ecological crisis, as well as spoke about what our country has to fulfil in that direction; besides she added that the states have their portion of culpability in not raising public awareness about the significant millennial objectives.

What is more, the Head of the YSLU Chair of Education Management and Planning, Head of Quality Assurance Centre Robert Khacahtryan discussed the operation of educational model of sustainable development in the RA, after which the RA NAS Head of the Chair of the UNESCO “Education for Sustainable Development” of the Centre for Ecological Noosphere Studies Gayanei Poghosyan referred to the international processes and the achievements of our country.

To conclude, the forum with the participation of lecturers and students was summarised with a Q&A session and discussions.
