Students with disabilities participate in discussion

“It never occurred to me how tough it’s to have hearing impairment. I am sure that God has a different path for me. We are all like each other, but we go the same path in different ways,” Greta Avagyan, a fourth-year student ofd the Faculty of Special and Inclusive Education, said when talking about the successful moments in her life.

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. On the occasion of the international day, the Faculty of Special and Inclusive Education organized an informative discussion entitled "Living Library".

Students with disabilities of the Faculty participated in the discussion. With their stories they reassured the audience that society will accept people with disabilities only when that person recognizes that his or her problem has solutions. They say one should not expect too much from others, rather they should guide the society himself and raise the level of awareness. Along with their success stories, they also talked about cases of human rights violations and other issues, including ramps for wheelchairs, lack of sign language interpretation, etc. Many of them are engaged in other fields. One of them is a three-time world champion in swimming, the other is the captain of the Armenian Blind Football Team and the like.

Students with disabilities studying at different faculties of the Pedagogical University are guided by the following slogans: “I am ready to understand and to be understood,” “I am against isolation,” “Too much attention disturbs sometimes.”

Lecturer Sipan Asatryan, the organizer of the event, has told his success story during various events. This time, he said with confidence that his life is like a building which is always under construction: each time a new floor is laid. He believes that every success story is a "living library" that can enrich everyone's knowledge and library.

Siranush Karapetyan, Dean of the Faculty of Special and Inclusive Education, is convinced that meetings and discussions in this format are a unique way of paving the way for equal rights. “The successful experience of each of you is the formula of your own success which comes to prove once again that it is you who should build society. There is light in every story that gives a feeling of excitement and pride,” she said advising everyone to build a healthy and informed society through love and knowledge.
