Studio named after Hovhannes Zardaryan opens at ASPU

“He was a great man. Art lovers in Armenia are celebrating his 100th anniversary this year. Entering the studio named after him each and every student will once again realize that he is studying at the educational institution where the renowned Armenian painter worked,” ASPU Rector Ruben Mirzakhanyan said during the opening ceremony of a studio named after prominent painter Hovhannes Zardaryan.

From now on, students of the Faculty of Art Education will have an opportunity to work in the studio named after the People's Artist of Armenia. Ruben Mirzakhanyan said it was a great honour for them to say that one of the renowned painters of the 20th century headed the ASPU Chair of Painting for more than a decade. During those ten years, Hovhannes Zardaryan taught a whole generation of Armenian artists who are well known for their works.

Ruben Misrakhanyan also spoke about the painter’s input in fine arts, considering it a great achievement in the history of national painting. The rector proposed to perpetuate the artist’s works and organize annual exhibitions showcasing not only the best works of the painter’s pupils but also those of BA and MA students.

“The Pedagogical University knows how to show respect to great people who have made a great contribution to the development of the University. Opening a studio named after the painter we prove once again that we are proud to be the descendants of his art,” said Professor Karen Aghamyan, President of the Artists’ Union of Armenia and Head of the Chair of Fine Arts at ASPU. He added that Hovhannes Zardaryan is one of the artists whose glory will remain eternal in Armenian fine arts.

Hovhannes Zardaryan’s daughter Anahit Zardaryan was also present at the opening ceremony. She said that when her father received an invitation to work at ASPU he was hesitant in the beginning because he was very busy and thought teaching would take too much time.

“He agreed and was soon convinced that he had reasons to be thankful for doing that job. Soon he invited the best artists to teach at the Pedagogical University. The result was inspiring,” Anahit Zardaryan said.

The painter’s daughter confessed that very often students complained that Hovhannes Zardaryan entered the auditorium and corrected their paintings with the touch of his big brush while it took them a long time to complete the works; the painter did the same thing which his teacher Sedrak Arakelyan had done with his works in time, saying that Armenian painting is painting of colours and even shade should be seen in colours.

“Hovhannes Zardaryan was the great brush of Armenian painting” Anahit Zardaryan said citing Hakob Kojoyan. She advised the future artists to hold the brush in the hands all the time.

Each of the lecturers of the Faculty had one painting exhibited during the ceremony.
