The Pedagogical University hosted a lecturing event by education an Expert in education field Serob Khachatryan headed “Teach and Learn; Teachers’ Role at Modern Schools”.
During the lecture the speaker referred to the existing education issues which are however little-discussed and observed that firstly we needed to understand the changes taking place in the world.
“Information technologies are among serious challenges for the sphere of pedagogy; a modern person or the so -called “screensurfers” no longer imagine their lives without those technologies, which make them more indifferent”.
In addition, Mr. Serob Khachatryan introduced the result of a recently conducted scientific research, which serves as a proof that doing several actions at the same time impedes concentration, and any distraction distances from the process of learning. Besides, the latter also noticed that this should be stated as an absolute truth in pedagogy, and that this issue was frequently observed amongst the youth.
“We, adults, are losing our children because our children have found other “adults””, the education expert considers it one of the biggest challenges of the sphere that today the function of educating is to a major extent fulfilled by technologies.
“There are also positive aspects in this, but we need to accept that learners have found a new world, which is “more interesting” than what is offered by formal education. We need to be very careful so that the loss doesn’t lead to destruction”.
Likewise, Serob Khachatryan was sorry to notice that there is another important component in the sphere of education, which was being ignored, and that was the ability to think, which should be one of the potential qualities of teachers in addition to the teaching methods and skill, acquired in the course of trainings. Today’s teachers should turn into information “architectures” instead of being just information transporters, which is more typical to the traditional education.
“If somebody asks me what the aim of education is, I’d say to create learners. If at the end of school, we do not bring up learners, but instead we have people, for whom that process has simply been a daily routine, then we lost it”.
Furthermore, in his lecture the expert spoke about one of the unwritten rules of pedagogy, which is to understand the moment, when you should leave the learner alone; and here we have learning levels, such as lead by a teacher, supervised, guided, and/or independent learning”.
“There is, in fact, a term “curse of knowledge”; the translation of the word “education” is to bring out from within, while very often for us it means to take in from outside. But teaching is not a mechanical process, and sometimes in order to overcome the inequality between the teachers and the learners, the latter should be allowed to teach one another.
Last but not least, during the meeting the education expert advised the teachers to frequently use the expressions “still”, “together”, “now, you try” in the process of teaching, as the higher bar and the Pygmalion effect could help to inspire learners to achieve a better result.
