The Presentation of the “Educational Dictionary of Linguistic Terms” Took Place

“My work about linguistic issues is based on two fundamentals – knowledge of old Armenian and linguistics, where Old Armenian provides the language layout, and linguistics provides the methodology. Knowledge of these two becomes the key that can open any doors in the “linguistic castle””, mentioned Lalik Khachatryan at the presentation of his book “Educational Dictionary of Linguistic Terms” at the Pedagogical University today. Besides, the Doctor of Philology and Professor observed that the care towards the language was set on scientific grounds by Mkhitar Sebastatsi and from there it continued.

“From the Mkhitaryans all the way to the State Language Committee, we are all engaged in pure preservation of language, but the specialized Chairs should also be involved therein”, the Professor added.

The Dictionary comprises definitions of linguistic terms in thematic (grouped) form, each term is comprehensively and contextually defined, which gives the Dictionary the value of an educational manual.

Leading specialists of the sphere, including the ASPU Acting Rector Ashot Khoyetsyan, Vice Rectors, linguists, the intelligence attended this event together with the current and former students.

“The presence of so many dignified persons here stands for the academic rigor of our University. It has come to us throughout history, to value the person a few years later and to present his/her merit to future generations. Today, I think it is our duty to praise and honor people, who live and create by our sides and to show to the future generations, who in their turn would make this continuous process an actual issue of its time”, mentioned the Acting ASPU Rector, Professor, Ashot Khoyetsyan and added that the Scientists Professor Lalik Khachatryan had a good name and reputation in wide scopes of public, was in a prosperous age for a scientist and that there were still many expectations from him.

Further, Vice Rector Srbouhi Gevorgyan noticed that Lalik Khachatryan was always able to present linguistics in the complicated system of Armenian studies, and that his authored books were of great interest in international scientific databases.

The Editor of the book, Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor Davit Gyurjinyan observed during his speech that linguistic as well as academic literature got replenished with another essential piece.

The dictionary is foreseen for humanities students, HES specialists, linguists, and generally for all those, who are interested in various language and linguistic matters.

“It differs from others, since it is a unique linguistic manual, where terms are grouped by linguistic study sections and subsections.”

The RA MESCS President of Language Committee, Linguist Davit Gyurjinyan presented the structure of the book and noted that he had separated the lexicography as an interesting and comprehensive section, where dozens of dictionaries, which did not exist in Armenian reality, were mentioned,
In addition, Davit Gyurjinyan emphasised that Lalik Khachatryan’s first book, published in 1985, when he was a Candidate of Sciences, brought him to where he stood today, this was the results of hard work of many years and accumulation.

“The Professor is able to cooperate, to listen, to accept, to contradict, this is also an important feature in scientific life”, the speaker added.
And in fact, it was Davit Gyurjinyan, who gave the idea of a linguistic dictionary to Lalik Khachatryan.

The Chief Editor of the “Krtutyun”[Education] weekly newspaper Gagik Minasyan considered the “Educational Dictionary of Linguistic Terms” a monumental work, and Reviewer, Doctor of Philology, Professor Vagharshak Madoyan, in his turn, observed that the book received additional value due to the fact that it was built on methods. The author had chosen what is useful and practical.

“National language is created not by dividing, but by joining, and this is the concept the author of the academic and scientific manual is guided by’.
“Armenian lexicography is rich and has passed a long way, massive monumental works of their times had been created and it is difficult to create something new by their side, more valuable pieces. Due to hard work and efforts of many years Lalik Khachatryan was able to create such a manual, which differs with its structure and is not yielding to its predecessors with its academic values”, mentioned the YSU Head of the Chair of General Linguistics, Associate Professor Vardan Petrosyan.

Likewise, the latter noticed that in the biography of each scientist there are milestone works, and he considered this Dictionary as that exact piece of work in Lalik Khachatryan’s scientific biography.

Next, Lalik Khachatryan’s coursemate Vrezh Saroukhanyan, in his turn, remembered their student years, when all parties remained unfinished for Lalik Khachatryan, as he preferred to go study and to learn something. And even 52 years ago they already called Lalik Khachatryan “professor”, which was confirmed by his academic title of Professor years after.

We would like to mention that in the “Educational Dictionary of Linguistic Terms” the linguistic terms are also grouped by domain and there is a list of linguistic terms.

Furthermore, the Professor’s former student, Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor Knarik Abrahamyan highlighted the significance of the manual also from the perspective of Armenian studies. According to her, very often students had a hard time structuring a scientific speech and would frequently use dictionaries; so, this dictionary would help to fill in this gap.

The MA student of the Faculty of Philology Lilit Danielyan in her turn added that the “Educational Dictionary of Linguistic Terms” provides a structured presentation of key issues of the linguistic science and can largely contribute to mastering both linguistic subjects and Armenian studies.
“This manual compiled by Professor Lalik Khachatryan is useful both for students as well as teachers of Armenian studies”.
