Within the framework of the “Financial Education at Schools”, training sessions organized by the initiative of the RA Central Bank and the Ministry of ESCS, are kicking off at the Pedagogical University.
Starting from August 21, training sessions for senior teachers, teachers of mathematics and social sciences will begin in all regions and in Yerevan. This year, according to the plan, around 3000 teachers from 360 schools will be trained within the scope of cooperation with the Pedagogical University.
By integrating financial elements in the subjects “Me and the World Around Me”, “Mathematics”, “Algebra” and “Social Sciences”, this project aims at developing relevant skills among learners in regards with making responsible decisions with respect to their personal funds. For instance, at the Mathematics classes on 5th and 6th grades, parallel with calculating the percentages, the teachers will discuss with the learners various financial cases through mathematical problems, practical assignments, projects and research activities. These financial cases can vary and mainly involve 7 thematic sectors, such as economy, budget, savings, debts, shopping, rights, security.
“This project, which has been held since 2015, is an essential project for the national strategy of financial education in the RA, and it has already passed through various phases. In 2015, taking into consideration the international practice, matrix of learners’ financial competences was created, after which a working group consisting of 1012 experts, developed criteria, projects and methodological guidelines for teachers for the above-mentioned subjects. In the 2017/2018 academic year, the project was successfully tested, and in September 2018 it was introduced in 346 schools and trained 2532 teachers”, the specialist of the RA Central Bank Consumers Advocacy and Financial Education Centre and the Project Coordinator Arthur Poqrikyan mentioned in his interview to the aspu.am and added that twice more learners would be involved in the project as a result of the second phase of the teachers’ training session in the current year.
What is more, the focus groups conducted during the project piloting demonstrate that the financial capacities develop not only among the pupils, but also their parents and teachers.
Last but not least, we would like to mention that the teachers training sessions, held within the scope of this project in Yerevan and in the regions, are conducted by ninety financial and methodology trainers. This year, the trainers’ team was replenished with representatives of the professoriate of the Pedagogical University, which makes it even more significant, taking into account the role of the University in educating future teachers.
