Workshop devoted to educational and scientific matters in teaching chess

The Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) and the “Chess” Scientific Research Institute hosted an online workshop aimed at creating a platform for exchange of knowledge and experience for the introduction of innovative approaches, the development of professional skills and the promotion of inclusive and effective teaching.

The workshop brought together over 300 chess teachers from all schools of the country.

ASPU Rector Srbuhi Gevorgyan expressed her greetings, wished the participants of the workshop fruitful work and interesting discussions and voiced hope that the platform will meet the teachers’ expectations.

“Chess is not only a game, but also a major educational tool that shapes learners’ thinking style, helps them become enterprising, have the ability to make decisions, be creative and shapes other major psychological qualities. The aim of the workshop is to attach importance to the development of the latest skills in the methodology of chess education for teachers of all schools in Armenia and life skills, as well as to consider issues related to the special conditions of a person in the context of universal inclusiveness,” the Rector remarked and voice hope that all participants will have their say in and make their contributions to the workshop in the context of development of personal and professional qualities.

Representative of the ASPU “Chess” Scientific Research Institute, education expert Serob Khachatryan also greeted the participants of the workshop and noted that the efforts of the Institute have helped accumulate vast experience over the past 14 years of teaching chess. He also attached importance to the fact that the subject has helped bring together a group of specialists and is being studied at the academic level. The education expert expressed gratitude to chess teachers, adding that it is hard to teach chess in our times when teaching is generally considered the most difficult, yet the most honorable task in the world.

“We attach importance to dialogue between those who develop the theories of chess and chess teachers — this is one of the guarantees for effectiveness, and this dialogue has been active for years due to the initiative of the Institute and the Chess Academy,” Serob Khachatryan noted and, on behalf of the speakers of the workshop, assured that even today, the Institute is willing to answer the questions that chess teachers send online.

The workshop continued with discussions in four areas, including Methodical Issues in Teaching Chess; Chess and Life Skills; Personal and Professional Growth of a Teacher and the Characteristics of Learners with Special Needs for Education and the Measures for Development of Teachers’ Capacities in the System of Inclusive Education. In their speeches, the researchers at “Chess” Scientific Research Institute touched upon the major issues and latest studies in regard to the topics related to the aforementioned areas.

During the online discussion held as part of the workshop, chess teachers sent questions related to teaching chess, starting from textbooks and ending with assessment of the expected outcomes, etc.; methodologists, those establishing criteria and researchers discussed these matters with respect to the relevant areas. According to the participants of the workshop, the event served as an effective platform for asking specialists a number of questions related to teaching and assessment of chess and chess in general and having a targeted and fruitful discussion.
