The ASPU Rector Rouben Mirzakhanyan met with the Heads of Departments.

The first question on the agenda of the already traditional meeting referred to the organization of distant -learning system.

The Head of the Department Management and Improvements of Educational Processes Mkrtich Avagyan presented his report, where he referred to the positive and negative aspects of changes recently applied to distant -learning system and highlighted that main complaints were in regards with students’ and lecturers’ workload.

In addition, he shared with the proposals offered by the Faculties for improvement of the system and outlined the most realistic of them, which specifically related to unloading the schedules, increasing the interactivity for lecturers, the electronic mid-term tests, etc. Another proposal suggested that, with the exception of a few disciplines, the mid-term exams be compiled in form of tests and be conducted in a Google Forms format, as well as that the mid-term examinations be assessed on aggregate basis.

The Rector of the Pedagogical University Rouben Mirzakhanyan noticed that peculiarities of certain disciplines should certainly be considered and other approaches should be developed for those disciplines to include students’ opinions and suggestions, too.

Likewise, the Rector advised that the Heads of Chairs should make proposals on distant-learning system improvements as decisions on enhancement of this system were going to be made at the upcoming Academic Board session.

The Heads of Chairs in their turn presented their recommendations, specifically with regards to registering the distant-learning students on the Google Classroom platform even before enrolling them, as well as reviewing the list of BA and MA distant-learning courses.

“The Chairs recorded issues and failures among 233 lecturers out of 700, which makes around 1/3rd of them”, mentioned Anoush Sargsyan and spoke about a number of technical issues while actually using the platform.

Once again, the Rector emphasized the importance and the necessity of using this platform and added that in fact it was in a permanent need of improvement and advancement. Besides, Rouben Mirzakhanyan informed that starting from March the activities demonstrated by the Chairs and the lecturers would also be discussed on the Google Classroom.

“Google classroom is a primary and essential factor, as it is impossible to think of a modern educational system without e-communication. It should not have just a figurative nature, as it is going to considerably facilitate the transition from distant learning to remote education”, mentioned the Rector and assured that the students’ perception of the platform is more positive than that of the lecturers.

At the end of the meeting the Rector once again recommended that the Heads of Chairs discuss activities aimed at advancement of both distant-learning system and the usage of Google Classroom and make proposals.
