Year-end meeting with ASPU students

On December 25, Rector of Armenian State Pedagogical University Ruben Mirzakhanyan met with the members of the Student Council to discuss the achievements of 2019 and to hear their approaches and suggestions regarding the educational process.

On behalf of the best students of all faculties, Best Student 2019 [Tatev Arshakyan] thanked the ASPU rector for the opportunity to travel to Western Armenia. The students then presented their concerns and suggestions regarding the educational process. In particular, they suggested that internship documents be submitted online [which will save both paper and money] and that first- and second-year students do master’s thesis research during the internship, thereby using their time more effectively. During the meeting the students also stressed the importance of informing the public about foreign languages taught at ASPU, the choice of Armenian Language and Armenian History at some faculties, student credits, etc.

The rector assured the students that the proposal to submit the internship file in an electronic format will be discussed with the Head of the Internship Centre. With regard to the master's thesis, the rector said that the University has students from other universities who have basic education and have to undergo pedagogical internship. In terms of content, organization of internship for those students is justified.

Regarding the departments that have few applicants and the work carried out in that direction, the rector stressed that first of all it is necessary to improve the quality of education; it is not fair that students who study well and those who don’t study at all receive the same certificate. The rector added that the specialties offered by the University are advertised by various means, including the programme “Formula for Success,” radio Fama and the University’s official newspaper, however ‘students have an exclusive role in this regard.’

The rector also spoke about the low salaries of lecturers, which directly affects the quality of education. “A well-paid specialist will surely work better,” he stressed. The head of the University stressed that they always try to hire the best specialists without paying attention to their age. When asked about the use of modern technologies and traditional teaching methods, the rector said they should be skillfully combined. With regard to improving the effectiveness of teaching Ruben Mirzakhanyan said that students should be able to choose a good lecturer who gives much knowledge and does not mark students easily.

At the end of the meeting the head of the University congratulated the students on the upcoming holidays and gave them his book “Impressionism: Artists of Armenian Origin.”
