The Pedagogical University has been offering Civil Defense courses since 1960. The Chair of Medical Science and Emergency Situations was established in 1966. In 2000, it was renamed Chair of Fundamentals of Medical Studies and Emergencies, and in 2012, it was renamed Chair of First Aid, Emergency Situations and Civil Defense.

Until 1995 students received certificates with the qualification of a reserve nurse in civil protection.

Ever since it was established, the Chair has been headed by renowned Doctors and Professors. From 1966 to 1982, the Chair was run by Doctor of Medicine, Professor J. Shmavonyan. Candidate of Medical Science, Associate Professor M. Asatryan headed the Chair from 1982 to1998, Candidate of Mathematics H. Grigoryan - from 2001 to 2016, and Doctor of Medicine, Professor S. Grigoryan - from 2016 to 2018. A. Yeremyan, ASPU Vice-Rector for Personnel and International Cooperation, was appointed Acting Head of the Chair in 2018.

Over the years, the staff has been replenished with a number of qualified professionals and doctors. Since the day of its establishment, the Chair has been cooperating with all faculties of the University, organizing courses for all students of the educational institution.

Throughout the 55 years of its existence, the Chair has carried out academic, methodological and research activities. In recent years, the Chair focuses on scientific-methodical activities. The works of the lecturers are published in various scientific journals, besides; the specialists of the Chair participate in national and international conferences. A number of monographs, methodological manuals and guidelines have been compiled and published by the staff of the Chair.

In 2016, the Chair of Human and Animal Physiology was merged with the Chair of First Aid, Emergency Situations and Civil Defense. After the merger, two doctors, two professors and two associate professors work in the Chair.

Though the Chair does not train specialists, it is involved in teaching of important academic disciplines in various faculties. The Chair also carries out two important tasks: organization of primary health care and activities aimed at improving civil defense preparedness, enhancing resilience to natural disasters, improving responses to the threat or occurrence of natural hazards, and boosting disaster risk reduction in emergencies.
