In the 40s of the previous century, the Armenian State Pedagogical University after Khachatur Abovyan was teaching Philosophy based on the Marxism-Leninism fundamentals at first at the Chair of History, then at the Chair of Philology.

From 1948, the Faculty of Psychology and Logic was carrying out that mission (the Faculty was open until 1956); from 1956 the subject was taught by the Faculty of Political Economics. In 1961 the Chair of Philosophy re-opened by Tachat Alexanyan.

Throughout different years the Chair was headed by professors Ashot Telunts, Aghasi Khachatryan, Albert Sahakyan, Vahagn Abrahamyan.

In 2006, as a result of establishment of the Department of Sociology and Pedagogy at the University, the Chair of Philosophy was renamed to the Chair of Philosophy and Sociology, and in 2009 the Chair of Philosophy and Sociology was dissolved and divided into two parts-Chair of Philosophy and Sociology and Chair of Social Work.

In 2011, the International Research Institute of Metaphilosophy, Transformation Logic and Argumentation Theory is founded at the ASPU (President-Academician Georg Brutyan). The aim of the Institute was to organized and to develop research in the abovementioned areas, involve lecturers and students in the Institute’s activities, publish the scientific works of the staff in the trilingual periodical called “Wisdom”, and to introduce the outcomes of the undertaken activities into the Pedagogical Practice.

The Institute had real, foreign and honorary members, cooperated with the international research institutions, emphasized the importance of the essence of Metaphilosophy and its development perspectives, language philosophy, issues of forecasting the development of the 21st century philosophy problems, rules of transformational logic, issues of transforming society, further elaboration of convincing in the process of argumentation, coordination and putting forward the practical assignments.

To fulfill the raised problems, the Chair of Logic, Theoretical and Practical Philosophy, Culturology was established as a result of cooperation of the ASPU, International Academy of Philosophy (founding Chairman, Academician Gevorg Brutyan, Co-Chairmen Yevangelos Moutsouupoulos (Greece) and Hans Kohler (Austria)) and the Armenian Academy of Philosophy (founding Chairman Academician Gevorg Brutyan) in 2011. The members of the Chair were included into the Institutes staff.

In the same year, under the presidency of the Professor, Academician Gevorg Brutyan the Specialised Counsel of Philosophy and Psychology 064 of the RA SCC was established; the professors of the Chair were the members thereof.

In 2012, as a result of merging of the two chairs at the Faculty of Education, Psychology and Sociology – the Chair of Philosophy and Logic (Head of the Chair Vahagn Abrahamyan) and Chair of Logic, Theoretical and Practical Philosophy (Head of the Chair Hasmik Hovhannisyan) the University’s Chair of Philosophy and Logic fas founded which included six Associate Professors and eight Candidates.

In 2015, after the decease of the Chairman of the Institute and Professor of the Chair, Academician Gevorg Brutyan, the ASPU International Research Institute of Metaphilosophy, Transformation Logic and Argumentation Theory is dissolved. The Chair of Philosophy and Logic undertakes the function of publication of the periodical “Wisdom”,  (website: http://wisdomperiodical.com) and the implementation of a base project funded by the RA National Committee of Science on Issues of Transformational Society, Methodological and Methodic Perspectives.

On November 3, 2016 by the decision of the Scientific Board of Armenian State Pedagogical University after Khachatur Abovyan the Chair was renamed Chair of Philosophy and Logic after Academician Georg Brutian.

The chair cooperates with several foreign Universities and international research centers (in particular with “Social and Humanities Education Institute (Belarus), Belarus State University, Saint Petersburg State University of Engineering and Economics, Moscow State University after Lomonosov, Institute of Philosophy of RF National Academy of Sciences, Turku University (Finland) Institute of Philosophy of National Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic, University of Amsterdam, Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (Athens), National Academy of Bucharest (Romania), Institute of Philosophy of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, University of Connecticut (USA), Bulgarian Association for Rhetoric), Pázmány Péter Catholic University (Hungary), Southwest University (China), etc).

The Chair has 14 courses on the BA degree, 17 on the MA Degree and 3 PHD courses. The Chairs academic, scientific and educational organizational activities are reflected in the Chair’s blog (http://chairoflogicphiloscult.wordpress.com/).
From 2013-2015, the Chair has been providing Distant –Learning courses on the Moodle platform, and in 2016- in Google Classroom.
