The Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geography was formed during the academic year 1938-1939 but was closed in 1941 because of the Great Patriotic War. It was reopened after the war in 1945.

In 1945-1951, it was called Faculty of Biochemistry. In 1951, the department of Geography was attached to the Faulty and it was called Faculty of Natural Sciences and Geography.

Highly merited scientists and educators who are well known not only in Armenia, but also in the former Soviet Union worked in the Faculty. Kamsar Avetisyan, Sahak Karapetyan, Vova Babayan, Vardan Sahakyan, Shavarsh and Vladislav Aghababyan were among them.

Today, the majority of staff members are graduates of the Faculty who continue, with the same responsibilities and competence, the best traditions (of the Faculty) which they inherited from their teachers.

The lecturing team of the Faculty consists of 14 Doctors of Science and 38 Candidates of Science.

Together with the University of Bern (Switzerland) and Tbilisi State University (Georgia), the Chair of Geography and its Teaching Methods is implementing the Sustainable Development and Resource Management in Mountain Areas Project. The start of the Project was announced three years ago.

The Project aims to study the problems of sustainable mountain development, resource governance, as well as landscape planning in mountain areas in the South Caucasus; create a corresponding training manual and Master’s degree programmes; provide exchange of students and researchers of the three universities in question.

Chair of Geography and its Teaching Methods

The Chair of Geography and its Teaching Methods is considered to be one of the oldest chairs of the University.
IIn different years, the Chair was headed by A. Nalbandyan, B. Charchyan, G. Sargsyan, B. Mitarjyan, G. Alexandryan, P. Parsadanyan, D. Poghosyan, L. Valesyan, V. Poghosyan, R. Hovesyan, S. Dulyan, Kh. Sargsyan, G. Karapetyan and A. Ajamoghlyan.
IResearch activities of the Chair are directed towards the following areas:

  • sustainable development in mountain regions and resource management
  • a comprehensive study of Armenian landscapes
  • landscape planning and effective use of mountain geosystems
  • study of global climate change, desertification, biodiversity conservation
  • geographic information analysis and spatial data
  • environmental protection and nature management in Armenia
  • study of sustainable tourism and recreation resources
  • study, evaluation and management of natural and man-made perils
  • hands-on digital mapping in compliance with school curricula

Educational practices, complex geographical research and studies are held at the Aghavnadzor-based training centre of the University (near the Marmarik River). Research on complex landscape is held in Yerevan and in marzes (provinces) while geographical research is conducted at the Museum of Natural History and Geological Museum, Centre for Ecological-Noosphere Studies of the RA National Academy of Sciences, Centre for Geodesy and Cartography SNCO of the State Committee of the Real Estate Cadastre of the RA Government, “ArmHydromet” SNCO of the RA Ministry of Territorial Administration and Emergency Situations, Hrazdan Gorge, Exotarium, Botanical and Zoological Gardens and other places.

The Chair has also established international links:

1.«Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions and Resource Management”The project partners are Armenian State Pedagogical University after Kh. Abovyan, the University of Bern (Switzerland) and Tbilisi State University (Georgia).

The project coordinator is Doctor of Geography, Pofessor Ashot Khoetsyan

The objective of the project is

  • create a corresponding training manual and Master’s degree programmes
  • provide exchange of students and young researchers of the three universities
  • ensure cooperation with the International Geographical Union

2.«Regional interdisciplinary research “Sustainable Tourism Development in Mountain Areas in the Context of Sustainable Community Development»

The project partners are Armenian State Pedagogical University after Kh. Abovyan, State Universities of Krems and Boku (Austria)

The project coordinator is Ashot Ayamoghlyan, Associate Professor, Candidate of Science in Mathematics

The objective of the project is

  • introduce scientific and interdisciplinary research in higher education curricula in the context of sustainable tourism development

3.International Geographical Union (Head of the Chair A/ Khoetsyan is a member of the commission “Landscape Analysis and Planning”)

4.Russian Geographical Society

The Department cooperates with the Institute of Geological Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia and Centre for Ecological-Noosphere Studies, Centre for Geodesy and Cartography SNCO of the State Committee of the Real Estate Cadastre of the RA Government, “ArmHydromet” SNCO of the RA Ministry of Territorial Administration and Emergency Situations, Departments of Physical Geography and Hydrometeorology, Cartography, Social and Economic Geography of Yerevan State University

The Chair also develops and compiles supporting materials for schools with the view of assisting

Geography teachers. They are posted on the University’s website and can be downloaded for free. Along with training and educational activities, the Department also attaches great importance to the conduct of research.

Chair of Biology, Chemistry and Their Teaching Methods

The Department of Chemistry and Its Teaching Methodology was founded in 1953. Since it’s foundation to the present, Department has trained more than 1,500 chemistry teachers for high schools and other educational institutions, as well as alumni obtained PhD and Doctoral degrees and continued their careers in leading research institutions linked to Armenian Academy of Sciences.

For more than 30 years, under supervision of Professor, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Vladimir O. Babayan, along with pedagogical activity, Department has been engaged in active scientific research. With focusing on halogen-containing derivatives of saturated and unsaturated compounds. As an accomplishment of these studies, one Doctoral and seven PhD theses were defended.

Since the 80s of the last century, Head of Department, Professor, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Mejlum L.Yeritsyan, a new scientific direction related with new type of nitrogen-containing linear and cyclic compounds and their copolymers has been developed. These compounds have been used for formulation of composite materials with heat- and frost-resistant properties. Six PhD theses have been successfully accomplished.

Department of Chemistry and Its Teaching Methodology actively collaborates with leading research institutions and universities of the Republic of Armenia in areas of scientific innovation and educational development.
