Chair of Chemistry and its Teaching Methods

The Chair of Chemistry and its Teaching Methods was created in 1953. The Chair has highly-qualified teaching staff, whose activity is directed at providing future teachers with necessary professional and methodological knowledge, skills and abilities. Seniors and Master’s degree students also make a considerable contribution to research work carried out by the Chair. To prepare and train qualified specialists, the Chair also collaborates with a number of research institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia.

Currently, the Chair has projects underway in the following areas:

1. development of methodological foundations of the formation of coordinated knowledge which is absolutely necessary and urgent as the effectiveness of organizing scientific-methodological work in secondary schools is mainly conditioned by search and incorporation of new methods and teaching techniques.

2. Synthesis of chelate-type monomers and polymers; preparation, characterization, and application of superabsorbent copolymers; study of their swelling behaviour (Supervisor – Professor M. L. Eritsyan). The study of properties of the obtained materials is carried out in collaboration with the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia.
3. Synthesis of surface-active quaternary ammonium salts containing hydrophobic radicals and complex study along with various unsaturated groups. The antimicrobial properties of the obtained salts in respect of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria have been identified.
Effective bactericidal mixtures are created on the basis of hydrogen peroxide, catamine AB, and bests salts, endowed with enhanced antimicrobial activity (Research Supervisor: Professor A. V. Babakhanyan). The study of colloid-chemical properties of synthesized salts is carried out in collaboration with the Chair of Physicochemistry of Yerevan State University. The study of germicidal actions is carried out by the Scientific-Research Institute of Epidemiology, Virology and Medical Parasitology after. A.B. Aleksanyan. The obtained substances endowed with applied properties are of great interest and significance in medicine, agriculture and other areas.
The employees of the Chair have written a number of methodological manuals and scientific articles which are published in local, as well as in foreign scientific journals.
The Chair is in close collaboration with the Institute of Chemical Physics of the Academy of National Science of the Republic of Armenia and particularly with the Technological Center of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry where the MA students of the Chair participate in different types of research.
TA Student Scientific Society was formed in the Chair which regularly organizes events dedicated to distinguished chemists and scientists. Not only students of the Chair, but also famous scientists of the republic participate in these events. Also, various events dedicated to the problems in modern chemistry are organized in different schools with the effort of students.
