Chair of Dance Pedagogy and its Teaching Methods

TThe Department of “Chair of Dance Pedagogy and its Teaching Methods” was founded in 1976, at the initiative of the People’s Artist of the Republic of Armenia Azat Gharibyan. A great contribution to the formation of the Department of choreography was made by the People’s Artist of the Armenian SSR Frunze Yelanyan who was at the head of it for 23 years. During these years, the Department of choreography has been the only scientific department in the field of choreography in the Republic of Armenia where hundreds of students got serious professional education thank to the fundamental work of the teaching staff.

Since 2004 Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Honored Cultural Professional of the Republic of Armenia Karen Gevorgyan has been at the Department of Choreography Pedagogy whose efforts have resulted in development and enhancement of curricula and disciplines taught, scientific and methodological materials and practical tasks thus the students have the opportunity to study more than 10 new special subjects obtaining theoretical and practical knowledge about the achievements of national and world dance art.

Throughout the course, the students have the opportunity to get acquainted with samples of ancient Armenian dances. They study the genesis of these dances, their choreographic structure, and evaluate the possibility of their reproduction with the help of course leaders. Along with the acquisition of research and performance skills the students reinforce their knowledge by studying theoretical materials related to the Armenian and European ballet art.

An in-depth study of our dance in the context of global culture will allow our young generation to proudly appear before the world as creative dancers, educators and theorists, experts in dance.

As a result of the consistent work of the faculty a new generation of dance teachers is being prepared. Many of them have something relevant to say in the field of choreography. Acquainted with the secrets of dance not only of the Armenian but also of other nations, by their work they prove the most important role of dance teacher devoting themselves to the noble cause of aesthetic education.

A number of the lecturers of the “Chair of Dance Pedagogy and its Teaching Methods’’ Department have taken part in international competitions, festivals, conferences - concerts and scientific seminars in many countries around the world.

Leading choreographers, dance theorists, masters of modern and classical dance art and famous cultural figures of the Republic teach on the Department today. Thanks to the hard work of a series of honored art experts who teach on the Department the level of educational and methodical work has been dramatically improved.

LMany generations have been educated in our Department and many outstanding personalities are among them today which is a brilliant evidence of the Armenian pedagogical thought. In this sense, it is also relevant to note that hundreds of graduates of the Department of choreography pedagogy have been providing the development of Armenian dance for decades as true enthusiasts of Armenian culture.
