Founded in 1922

As one of the pillars of Armenia’s educational system, Khachatur Abovyan Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) has been illuminating the path of many generations for over 100 years. On November 7, 1922, at a time when literacy itself was a challenge in Armenia, this institution was founded with a clear and powerful mission—to teach how to teach.

The Pedagogical Institute headed by prominent educator Arshavir Shavarshyan was founded in 1922, in Soviet Armenia, when the imperative for an educated society, and teachers’ mission became highly important. 

A Symbolic Path – Honoring a Great Enlightener

In 1948, the Institute was named after the great Armenian enlightener Khachatur Abovyan and the institution still bears his name.  In 2000, the Institute was renamed Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) named after Khachatur Abovyan.
