The the Faculty was established in 2011, but SEN (special education needs) specialists have been trained in Armenia since the 1980s. The Chair of Defectology was founded within the Faculty of Pedagogy and Elementary Teaching Methods.

Lecturers of the Faculty collaborate with various educational and healthcare institutions and specialists. They participate in different international conferences and are involved in pedagogical and psychological activities of educational, rehabilitation, and medical institutions. This contributes to the internationalization of the Faculty, implementation of joint work, and development of students' theoretical and practical knowledge, abilities, and skills.

The mission of the Faculty is to prepare qualified specialists to work with people with special educational needs, provide an accessible environment for students and employees with disabilities and provide professional support.

The Faculty actively participates in the formation and development of mechanisms for internal regulation of social behaviour of people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). It ensures the quality of professional education and carries out institutional self-assessment, develops state standards for higher education, organizes professional training, and international conferences, as well as research to apply knowledge based on modern research and to improve teaching methods.

Graduates of the Faculty can work as SEN teachers and psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists and art therapists in educational, medical and rehabilitation sectors: in schools, preschool institutions, regional pedagogical-psychological support centers, hospitals, polyclinics, various development centers, specialized institutions (orphanages, special educational complexes for children with hearing impairments, special educational complexes for children with visual impairments, group homes for people with disabilities, psychiatric hospitals, nursing homes, etc.)
