The Chair of Defectology was established in the Faculty of Elementary Education and Teaching Methodics in 1983. The Head of Chair was Associate Professor Arsen Minasyan, Candidate of Pedagogigal Sciences. In different years, the Chair was headed by Associate Professor Hovhannes Aghavelyan, Candidate of Pedagogigal Sciences, Associate Professor Zabella Zohrabyan, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences and Associate Professor Spartak Palikyan, Candidate of Biological Sciences.

In 2011, the Chair of Special Pedagogy and Psychology was founded and Professor Robert Azaryan, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, was appointed as the Head of the Chair.

Since March, 2018, the Chair is headed by Associate Professor Tereza Y. Azatyan, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences.

The Chair of Special Pedagogy and Psychology prepares teachers of students with hearing impairments, visual impairments, cognitive disorders, special psychologist, and special pedagogues. Leading specialists in the country work at this Chair: two Doctors of Sciences, Professor, Associate Professors, Candidate of Pedagogical and Psychological Sciences.

Most of the lecturers of the Chair of Special Pedagogy and Psychology work at specialized children’s homes, development centers, educational and medical institutions.

Special programs are elaborated at the Chair and are practically implemented, books, monographs, manuals are published by the lecturers on education, preparation to independent living and integration into society of persons with special needs. The Lecturers publish articles in international journals.

The Chair professional staff always participates at professional development trainings, international conferences both in Armenia and in foreign countries, organize professional development courses for specialist and teachers. Most of them periodically participate at Erasmus+ Lecturers exchange mobility programs (Estonia, Czech Republic, Finland, Italy).
