In 1983, the Faculty of Elementary Education and Teaching Methods set up the Chair of Pathology, which was headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Arsen Minasyan.

In different years, the Chair has been under the direction of Candidates of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professors Hovhannes Aghavelyan, Zabella Zohrabyan, as well as Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor Spartak Palikyan.

In 2011, the Chair of Special Pedagogy and Psychology was set up as part of the Faculty of Special Education; PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Robert Azaryan was appointed Head of the Chair, and in 2018, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Tereza Azatyan (father’s name: Yuri) was appointed Head of the Chair.

The Chair of Special Pedagogy and Psychology prepares special pedagogues, surdopedagogues, typhlopedagogues and oligophrenopedagogues.

The Chair has the leading specialists of the country, including one Doctor of Sciences, Candidate of Pedagogical and Psychological Sciences and Associate Professors.

Most of the professors of the Chair of Special Pedagogy and Psychology work in specialized orphanages, development centers, as well as educational and medical institutions.

The Chair develops and introduces special programs, prints books, monographs, educational and methodical manuals, which are targeted at the education and upbringing of persons with special educational needs, and are aimed at preparing them for independent life and engaging them in public life.

The professors of the Chair have scientific works published in cited foreign periodicals.

The lecturers and professors of the Chair always participate in courses for qualification improvement and international scientific conferences in both Armenia and abroad. The Chair also hosts training courses and qualification improvement courses for specialists and teachers.

The majority of lecturers and professors take part in the Erasmus+ exchange programs for professors (Portugal, Estonia, Czechia, Finland, Italy).

Since September 2025, Candidate of Psychological Sciences, Associate Professor Lilit Karapetyan (father’s name: Gurgen) is the acting Head of the Chair.

The Chair prepares highly qualified specialists who, with their knowledge and dedication, assist in the development and social integration of children and persons with special educational needs.
