The Faculty was established in the 1948-1949 academic year. In 1956, it was reorganized to include school and preschool departments. Along with with the Faculty and the professional chair, the Psychology Laboratory founded in 1957, was a forge for the development of psychological thought in Armenia.
Headed by Professor Mkrtich Mazmanyan, Doctor of Psychology, full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Honoured Worker of Science of the Armenian SSR, the Laboratory has studied and developed key issues in labour psychology and school psychology. Numerous psychology scientists have worked in the Laboratory carrying out fruitful activity.
Doctor of Psychology, Professor Sergey Arzumanyan greatly contributed to the development of legal psychology, child psychology, and scientific thought in Armenia. The Faculty of Psychology and Pedagogy, which was established through the efforts of Sergey Arzumanyan and other prominent Armenian psychologists, trained and prepared psychologists to work in schools, secondary vocational institutions, and departments of the Ministries of Defense and Justice, thereby laying the foundation for the development of new directions in the country.
Among the prominent figures who have greatly contributed to the development of age and pedagogical psychological thought in Armenia are Professors Vladimir Karapetyan and Emma Aleksandryan. The latter is the first female doctor in Armenia to initiate and establish the first rehabilitation center for child psychology.
Graduates of the Faculty can work as psychologists, social educators, social workers, sociologists in educational, healthcare, rehabilitation, care institutions, scientific research institutes, development, pedagogical-psychological, educational and training centers, in probation centers and various structures conducting socio-psychological, sociological and marketing research, in social services, medical, penitentiary institutions and other organizations.
