In the 1946-1947, the first Chair of Psychology in Soviet Armenia was opened in the Armenian State Pedagogical Institute named after Khachatur Abovyan. Vera Darbinyan, Shavarsh Simonyan, Drastamat Ter-Mkrtchyan and Mkrtich Mazmanyan were lecturing in the chair under the leadership of Gayane Hovsepyan, who was a graduate student of the prominent Soviet psychologist Sergey Rubinstein.

Professor Mkrtich Aram Mazmanyan (was a deputy director of the institute for scientific affairs until 1934, in 1940 he became a candidate of science, 1965- doctor of science, 1966- professor, 1967- full member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the USSR, 1965- honored figure of science of the USSR). In 1951 he was appointed the head of the psychology department, and in 1957 he founded the problem laboratory of psychology. In 1965, the first union of psychologists in Armenia was founded. After Mkrtich Mazmanyan’s death in 1977-83 the chair was headed by Assyr Hakobyan, who was at that time an associate professor of M.Sc. Ph.D.

In 1967 Professor Karlen Voskanyan was a candidate of science, in 1983- doctor of science, 1988 -professor). 1992-96, 2003-05 Professor Sergey Arzumanyan (1972, candidate of science, 1988, doctor of science, 1989, professor) was appointed the head of the chair, later he was appointed as the head of the psychology problem laboratory department.

In 1991 he was leading the Armenian Psychological Society. From 2005 to 2011 an associate professor Susanna Pilosyan became the Head of the Department of Theory and History of Psychology. Her successor Professor S. Mkrtumyan leaded the department from 2011 to 2016, due to him, in 2014 The "Laboratory of Psychology of Crisis and Emergency Situations" was opened next to the chair. In 2016-17 Srbuhi Gevorgyan, Ph.D., professor, chairman of the professional council of psychology 064 (2021 - rector of the university), has already been appointed as the acting head of the psychology department.

3 doctors and professors of psychological sciences,18 candidates of sciences, associate professors, 8 post-graduate students and applicants are lecturing in the chair. 2017-20 Professor Vazgen Margaryan, was appointed as an acting head of the department, In 2020-21. Ruzanna Petrosyan, Dean of the Faculty of Psychology and Sociology of Education, 2021. Professor Kamo Vardanyan. From 2021, the acting head of the chair is Associate Professor Levon Sargsyan. In 2022 in honor to the academician Mkrtich Aram Mazmanyan, the chair of psychology was named after him.

In 2022, 3 conferences were organized, by the initiative of the chair under the headline Republican: with the title of Forensic Psychology, Theory and Practice, International:with the title of Social-Psychological Consequences of War, Student Psychological Research: with the title, the 1st and 2nd issues of the scientific periodical "Psychological Issues" were published. 1 doctor of psychological sciences is lecturing at the chair, a professor, 10 candidates, associate professors, 2 graduate students and applicants. There are 2 graduate students and 22 applicants in the chair. The department's specialists continue to develop and publish educational manuals and textbooks. Special importance is given to the development of international relations.
