Chair of Ancient and Medieval Armenian Literature and its Teaching Methods

In 1922, the Chair of Armenian Language and Armenian Language and Literature was a united Chair, and in the 1930s, the Chair of Armenian Literature became a separate academic unit.

In 1938-1951, the Head of the Chair of Armenian Literature was Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Arshaluys Babayan, followed by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Vache Partizuni in 1951-1984.

Both Arshaluys Babayan and Vache Partizuni were distinguished figures in science in the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1984-1989, the Head of the Chair of Armenian Literature was Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Karlen Danielyan.

Doctors of Philological Sciences, Professors Yeghishe Petrosyan, Hector Rshtuni and Avag Khachatryan have worked in the former Chair of Armenian Literature for many years.

Corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Sevak Arzumanyan worked in the Chair of Armenian Literature from 1978 until his passing away.

Doctors of Philological Sciences, Professors Suren Danielyan and Martin Gilavyan were part of the main staff when A. Dolukhanyan was Head of the Chair. In the Master’s Degree Program, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia Sergey Sarinyan, Doctors of Philological Sciences, Professors Laura Muradyan and Aleksandr Makaryan were guest lecturers.

In 1990, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Aelita Dolukhanyan was elected Head of the Chair of Armenian Literature and its Teaching Methods, and she held the position until August 2013.

In August 2013, the Chair of Armenian Literature and its Teaching Methods was disengaged, leading to the emergence of two new Chairs. Aelita Dolukhanyan was elected Head of the Chair of Ancient and Medieval Armenian Literature and its Teaching Methods.

Currently, the staff of the Chair includes corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor, Head of the Chair Aelita Dolukhanyan; Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Lilit Hovsepyan; Candidates of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professors Ruzan Dolukhanyan and Gayane Mardyan (Teaching Methods of Literature).

The activities of the Chair of Ancient and Medieval Armenian Literature include the following periods of Armenian literature: Armenian folklore, ancient and medieval Armenian literature, history of Armenian literary-critical thought and the teaching methods of Armenian literature.

Throughout its existence, the Chair of Ancient and Medieval Armenian Literature and its Teaching Methods has published 20 academic anthologies, and the academic works of Master’s Degree students and applicants have been released under the recommendation of the Chair.

The Literary Press Club has operated within the Chair of Ancient and Medieval Armenian Literature and its Teaching Methods for many years.

Through a memorandum, the Chair co-operates with the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts (Matenadaran), the Historical-Philological Journal of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia and the Literary Press of the Writers’ Union of Armenia.
