Chair of the History of Armenia

One of the oldest educational-scientific subdivisions of the University was founded in 1936. The first director was Professor Hakob Zoryan, followed by Professor Hamo Harutyunyan. Throughout the years, the Chair of the History of Armenia has been under the direction of renowned historians-scholars, including Vardges Hamazaspyan, Morus Hasratyan, Suren Hakobyan, Shmavon Harutyunyan, Levon Shahinyan, Mher Karapetyan and Ashot Piliposyan. Currently, the Chair is under the direction of Edik Gevorgyan.

Outstanding scholars Ashot Hovhannisyan, Mkrtich Nersisyan, Vardan Parsamyan, Suren Yeremyan, Karo Ghafadaryan, Zaven Grigoryan, Grigor Mikayelyan, Harutyun Martirosyan, Aramayis Mnatsakanyan, Haykaz Zhamkochyan, Tadevos Hakobyan, Stepan Melik-Bakhshyan, Valter Diloyan, Haykaz Poghosyan, Khachatur Musheghyan, Grigor Grigoryan, Hayk Ghazaryan, Albert Kharatyan, Ashot Melkonyan, Rafik Nahapetyan and many others have carried out effective scientific-pedagogical activities within the Chair of the History of Armenia. Most of them have held high positions in the state, scientific-educational and management sectors.

The Chair of the History of Armenia has made serious contributions to the academic studies of all periods of the history of Armenia, as well as to various issues related to archaeology, source study, lithography, numismatics, ethnography, historical geography, historiography, culture, Armenian communities abroad, history of the Diaspora and genocide research.

The Chair of the History of Armenia has published a large number of permanent and highly valuable scientific works. The Chair’s professors are also authors and co-authors of several university and school textbooks and educational-methodical manuals.

The Chair of the History of Armenia works closely with the Institutes of History, Archaeology and Ethnography and Oriental Studies at the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia and the Faculty of History at Yerevan State University, actively participates in republican and international scientific conferences and takes part in the activities of professional councils granting academic ranks.

Most of the professors deliver lectures at prestigious universities abroad (Hungary, Spain, Poland, England, Greece, the Russian Federation, Lebanon, etc.), participate in international scientific and educational programs and in the development of scientific topics in the Republic of Armenia through funding provided from the State Budget.

The Chair of the History of Armenia plays an indisputable role in the preparation and training of history teachers, as well as young scholars in Armenia and in the Diaspora.
