Chair of Geography and its Teaching Methods
The Chair of Geography and its Teaching Methods was founded in 1935 by Professor Hayrapet Hovhannisyan.

In 1938, the Chair was divided into two Chairs — the Chair of Physical Geography and the Chair of Economic Geography. Throughout the years, the Chairs have been chaired by A. Nalbandyan, B. Charchyan, G. Sargsyan, B. Mitarjyan, G. Aleksandryan, P. Parsadanyan, D. Poghosyan, L. Valesyan, V. Poghosyan, R. Hovesyan, S. Dulyan, Kh. Sargsyan, G. Karapetyan, A. Ajamoghlyan and A. Khoetsyan throughout the years.

Currently, the Head of the Chair of Geography and its Teaching Methods is Candidate of Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor Marieta Muradyan (father’s name: Yurik).

The main research activities of the Chair are in the following areas: data-based geographic education in the context of developing capabilities for spatial thinking and sustainable development; sustainable development and resource management in mountainous countries; complex study of landscapes in the Republic of Armenia; landscape planning and effective use of mountain geosystems; issues in global climate change, desertification and preservation of biodiversity; geographic information analysis of data of geographical research; development of modern methods and technologies in teaching geography.

The Chair has had a scientific-educational laboratory for nearly a decade, and since 2014 — a Geography Laboratory operating as part of the ASPU Center for Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), equipped with the necessary items, equipment and digital tools.

The Chair carries out international programs with the University of Bern; Tbilisi State University; IMC Krems University of Applied Sciences and BOKU University; Private University of Education, Diocese of Linz; University of Western Macedonia in Greece and the Association for Values and Knowledge Education.
The Chair also collaborates with Ilia State University; Caucasus University in Tbilisi; Dimitrie Cantemir Christian University in Romania and the University of Oradea in Romania.

The Chair of Geography and its Teaching Methods develops relevant supporting materials for the general education school’s curriculum, lesson plans and syllabi for the geography subject for universities and schools, as well as publishes and edits university and school textbooks, educational and methodical manuals and monographs.
