From the establishment of the Armenian State Pedagogical University until 1948, there was a Unified Chair of Biological Subjects, and in 1948-49, separate Chairs of the Faculty were formed on the basis of the Unified Chair of Biological Subjects, including the Chair of the Teaching Methods of Botany, Zoology and Biology and the Chair of Agricultural Fundamentals.

The ASPU Chair of Biology, Chemistry and their Teaching Methods was set up recently, that is, in 2019 when the Chair of Biology and its Teaching Methods and the Chair of Chemistry and its Teaching Methods were merged.

These Chairs have come a long way since the establishment of the Armenian State Pedagogical University, and have bore different names in different years.

In particular, the Chair of Biology and its Teaching Methods was the successor of the Chair of Botany and Zoology and the Chair of the Teaching Methods of Biology, while the Chair of Chemistry and its Teaching Methods was set up as a result of the merger of the Chair of Organic and Physical Chemistry and the Chair of Inorganic and Biological Chemistry.

These Chairs were headed by PhD in Biological Sciences, Professors Levon Harutyunyan (father’s name: Vram), Martin Hambaryan (father’s name: Yerem), Artashes Ziroyan (father’s name: Norayr); PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Tigran Tangamyan (father’s name: Varazdat); PhD in Chemical Sciences, Professor Mezhlum Yeritsyan (father’s name: Levon); Candidate of Chemical Sciences, acting Professor Ashot Babakhanyan (father’s name: Vardges).

Currently, the Chair of Biology, Chemistry and their Teaching Methods is under the direction of PhD in Biological Sciences, Professor Samvel Pipoyan (father’s name: Khachatur).

The Chair has 4 Professors, 1 acting Professor, 6 Associate Professors and 2 lecturers, who teach 23 professional subjects in the Bachelor’s Degree Program for Biology and Biology-Chemistry, 20 professional subjects in the Bachelor’s Degree Program for Chemistry, and 34 professional subjects in the Master’s Degree Program for Biology and Chemistry.

Over the past decade, the Chair has carried out a number of reforms. In particular, the Chair has set up Biology and Chemistry laboratories, is consistently working on replenishing the Chair with young specialists, and the lecturers of the Chair publish manuals for universities and textbooks for general education schools. Most of the staff members of the Chair participate in the implementation of theme-based programs based on a state contract and the implementation of programs that are carried out on the basis of grants provided by international donors.

Within the scope of scientific-pedagogical activities, the Chair collaborates with several research institutes and universities of the Republic of Armenia.
