Chair of TV and Radio Journalism

The Chair of TV and Radio Journalism was established in 1995 by renowned film director, People’s Artist of the USSR, Professor Yuri Yerzikyan, and was formerly a specialization of the Chair of Film Mastery established in 1970. From 1996 to 1997, the Chair was headed by famous film director, People’s Artist of the USSR Frunze Dovlatyan, from 1997 to 2007 — by outstanding cameraman, People’s Artist of the USSR Albert Yavuryan, and from 2007 to 2012 — by famous stage director, Professor Aida Hovhannisyan.

In 2012, the joint Chair was divided into three professional Chairs, including the Chair of TV and Radio Journalism; the Chair of Camera, Artistic Photography and Socio-Cultural Activities and the Chair of Theater and Film Direction.

The Chair of TV and Radio Journalism was headed by Associate Professor Armen Amiryan. Since 2013, the Head of the Chair is renowned screenwriter for television shows and films, Associate Professor Levon Galstyan.

The Chair has a rich history, with nationally recognized journalists, scholars and media specialists. Since its establishment, several reputable specialists have lectured in the Chair, including journalists Armen Hovhannisyan and Robert Mavisakalyan; PhD in Philological Sciences, Professor Sergo Yeritsyan; corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, Professor Artem Sargsyan; Shamiram Aghabekyan; Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Colonel Nikolay Grigoryan; Director of “Nork” TV and later Prometevs TV, Distinguished Journalist of the Republic of Armenia, Colonel, Associate Professor Seyran Shahsuvaryan; Editor-in-Chief of “Azg” (Nation) periodical, Professor Hakob Avetikyan; economic commentator of “Azg” periodical Ara Martirosyan; Lilik Stepanyan; Narine Mkrtchyan; radio journalist Hovik Hoveyan; journalist of “Kentron” TV Petros Ghazaryan; journalist of the Public Radio Stepan Marutyan; Editor-in-Chief of “Aravot” newspaper, Candidate of Art Criticism Aram Abrahamyan; distinguished journalists Varuzhan Olkinyan, Artur Bakhtamyan and others.

Even today, the Chair has experienced lecturers and practicing media specialists, who combine theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience; the Chair is replenished with high-class professionals, including Deputy Dean of the Faculty, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Artashes Martirosyan; renowned TV journalists; Candidate of Art Criticism, Professor Artur Baghdasaryan; Candidate of Psychological Sciences, Associate Professor Diana Markosyan; Karine Titanyan; Editor-in-Chief of “New Mag” magazine Gnel Nalbandyan; acting Associate Professor Karine Kocharyan and others.

Education is carried out through the on-site educational system — Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programs in “Journalism” profession, which includes all the specializations of print, TV, radio and online journalism.

The practical courses are held in classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, including the classrooms named after Sergo Yeritsyan, Stepan Poghosyan and Yuri Yerznkyan.

The Chair’s lecturers regularly participate in various educational programs, all-University, republican and international scientific conferences, as well as training courses in order to bring journalism education into compliance with modern conceptual principles.

The students’ internships are organized at the country’s leading TV and radio companies, media outlets, as well as the First University Radio “Fama”, securing the close bond between education and professional activities.
