Chair of Preschool Pedagogy and Methodology
The Chair of Preschool Pedagogy and Methodologies has a long history.

In 1944, through the efforts of distinguished pedagogue Araksya Hunanyan, the Chair of Preschool Pedagogy was founded as part of the Pedagogical Institute, and it played a significant role in the preparation of pedagogical personnel and the publication of scientific-methodical literature.

Meritorious scholar-pedagogues, including A. Shavarshyan, M. Santrosyan, M. Mazmanyan, H. Karamyan, Sh. Simonyan and others assisted the Chair of Preschool Pedagogy in the preparation of scientific-pedagogical personnel.

From 1961 to 1997, the Head of the Chair of Preschool Pedagogy and Psychology was PhD in Psychological Sciences, Professor Emma Aleksandryan (father’s name: Artashes).
In 1997, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Svetlana Marutyan (father’s name: Aleksandr) was elected Head of the Chair of Preschool Pedagogy and Methodologies.

Well-known scholars have worked in the Chair since its establishment, including R. Gevorgyan, L. Verdyan, R. Arakelyan, H. Harutyunyan, Sh. Mkrtchyan and L. Ayvazyan. Among those who bore and continued what they started were Associate Professors M. Ghukasyan and Zh. Khachatryan; Candidates of Pedagogical Sciences L. Ghazaryan and K. Hovakimyan, as well as young lecturers L. Chobanyan, L. Hakobyan, K. Tsaturyan, M. Sahakyan, H. Tumaghayan, A. Simonyan, A. Tovmasyan and M. Avagyan.

Since 2011, the Chair is part of the newly established Faculty of Primary Education and is replenished with young specialists, PhD students and applicants.
The Chair publishes textbooks, scientific articles, methodological manuals and programs. It actively participates in the academic, pedagogical and organizational activities in the University.

Since 2014, the Chair’s professors have been participated in the annual training program for Diaspora Armenian teachers that is hosted by “Diaspora” Scientific and Educational Centre.
The professors of the Chair publish educational-methodological manuals and print articles in various pedagogical journals and magazines.

From 2016 to 2022, PhD in Psychological Sciences, Professor Vladimir Karapetyan (father’s name: Sevan) served as Head of the Chair of Preschool Pedagogy and Methodologies.

Also, the Chair works closely with the relevant Chairs of foreign universities, including Moscow Pedagogical State University (MPSU), H.S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University, Russian State Pedagogical University named after A.I. Gertsena in Saint Petersburg and M. Tank Belarusian State Pedagogical University.

The Chair works closely with non-governmental organizations as well.
The academic areas of the Chair are as follows: introducing reforms in the preschool education system; developing a modern concept of preschool education, state educational criterion for preschool education, and state comprehensive programs for preschool education; introducing modern technologies in preschool education and development, in particular — speech development, elementary mathematical concepts, physical education, ecological education, as well as testing the introduction of inclusive preschool education and prior knowledge of chess.

All the professors of the Chair regularly participate in various educational programs, all-university, republican and international scientific conferences and training programs, placing emphasis on the educational-methodological activities of the Chair that are carried out for introduction of educational reforms in the preschool system, improving preschool education, in accordance with the modern conceptual principles.

In 2018, through funding from the World Bank, the Faculty set up multimedia laboratories, and a number of professors of the Chair were engaged in the activities.

In 2021, as a result of the cooperation of the Chair, the FIDE and the “Chess” Research Institute, the entire staff of the Chair was engaged in the training that was part of the “Chess in Preschool Education Institutions”. More than 30 electronic game-tasks (devoted to chess) were developed as part of the “Chess in Preschool Education Institutions” program on the innostud.am electronic platform operating as part of the multimedia laboratory.

Since 2022, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Armenuhi Manukyan (father’s name: Mnatsakan) is the acting Head of the Chair.

By having presented pretentious scientific-research programs since 2023, the Chair has participated in the training competitions announced by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of the Republic of Armenia — “FOR (CERTIFICATION) OF THE RIGHT OF DIRECTOR OF PRESCHOOL EDUCATION INSTITUTION TO MANAGEMENT” and “MANDATORY TRAINING FOR PEDAGOGICAL WORKERS OF PRESCHOOL EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS” — and was recommended as a training organization.

By the Order of the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of the Republic of Armenia, in 2025, the Kh. Abovyan Armenian State Pedagogical University was guaranteed implementation of the 20-credit teacher certification courses based on the “Preschool Pedagogy, Psychology and Educational-Methodological Skills” module for a term of 5 years.
