Chair of Fine Arts

The Chair of Fine Arts was established in 2012 following a merger of the Chairs of Color Picture and Drawing. The latter were set up on the basis of the Chair of Painting, which was founded in 1961.

Prior to 1966, the Chair of Painting was under the direction of Distinguished Artist, Associate Professor Karapet Minasyan.

In different years, the Chair has been headed by Mamikon Panosyan; People’s Painter, Professor Edvard Isabekyan; People’s Painter, Professor Hovhannes Zardaryan. In 1968, the Chairs of Color Picture and Drawing were established on the basis of the Chair of Painting.

In 1968-1988, the Chair of Color Picture was headed by corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the former USSR, People’s Painter, Professor Hovhannes Zardaryan, followed by People’s Painter, Professor Suren Safaryan. In 1988-2012, the Head of the Chair of Color Picture was PhD, Professor Lems Nersisyan, and starting from 1968, the Head of the Chair of Drawing was a corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the former USSR, People’s Painter, Professor Ghukas Chubaryan.

Later, the Heads of the Chair of Drawing were People’s Painter of the Republic of Armenia, Professor Zakhar Khachatryan; Associate Professor Hovhannes Muradyan; Professors Stepan Grigoryan and Artashes Keshishyan.

In 2012, the Chairs of Color Picture and Drawing merged. The newly established Chair was renamed to the Chair of Fine Arts, and Lems Nersisyan was appointed the acting Head.

In 2013, Sargis Terzyan was appointed acting Head of the Chair of Fine Arts, and in 2014 — People’s Painter, Professor Paravon Mirzoyan.

In 2017, PhD in Art Criticism, Professor Ara Hakobyan was the acting Head of the Chair of Fine Arts.

In 2018, the Chair of DKA and Design was joined with the Chair of Fine Arts and was headed by Distingushed Artist of the Republic of Armenia, Professor Karen Aghamyan. In 2023, Professor Artur Martirosyan was appointed acting Head of the Chair of Fine Arts, and in 2024 — PhD in Art Criticism, Professor Ara Hakobyan.

Since 2026, the acting Head of the Chair of Fine Arts is Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Artashes Keshishyan.

Thanks to the education provided by the Chair of Fine Arts, students learn the basics of professional painting (painting, drawing, machine graphics, sculpting, book design, computer graphics, as well as pedagogical and methodical skills in the fine arts sector.

The aim of the Chair is to provide students with the relevant professional literacy and prepare high-level educators-artists.
