Orbelyan Gevorg Gagik
The professional pathway of Gevorg Orbelyan, Director of Yerevan History Museum and a graduate of the Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU), is a vivid example of how education, continuous self-development, international experience, and management skills can shape the image of a successful leader and scholar.
After graduating from the Department of Museology of the Faculty of Culture of ASPU in 2005, he dedicated his professional activities to the preservation, study, and promotion of cultural heritage.
The interest in museums and historical and cultural heritage that developed during his student years later evolved into a long-term and purposeful professional career.
Since joining Yerevan History Museum in 2005, Gevorg Orbelyan has gradually progressed in his professional career, holding various positions and gaining extensive experience in museum management, exhibition organization, research activities, and the implementation of cultural programs.
A significant milestone in his professional development was his activity in Japan, where in 2015–2016 Gevorg Orbelyan was selected as an international research fellow and visiting lecturer at the National Museum of Ethnology (Minpaku) in Osaka.
From 2016 to 2022, Gevorg Orbelyan served as Head of the Tourism Unit of the Department of Culture and Tourism at the Yerevan Municipality. Yerevan’s attractiveness as a tourist destination and its international visibility significantly increased thanks to his initiatives.
In particular, with his direct involvement and coordination, the “Yerevan City Tour” tourist bus route was introduced, the official tourism website and mobile application “Visit Yerevan” were created, Tourist Information Centers were established, and multilingual tourist maps of Yerevan were developed and distributed.
Gevorg Orbelyan has participated in numerous international conferences and cultural forums across Europe, North and South America, Asia, and other regions, presenting his research and experience on the development of Armenian museology, urban history, cultural heritage and tourism. He has contributed to increasing the international visibility and recognition of Armenia’s museums and tourism communities.
He also has an active role in professional organizations. Gevorg Orbelyan is a member of the ICOM Armenia, and has been elected for two terms to the governing bodies of ICOM-ICEE and other international museum organizations, contributing to the development of international cooperation and the exchange of professional experience.
Alongside his academic work, he is the author of the book “Old and New Yerevan,” the tourist guide “Yerevan in Your Pocket,” as well as more than twenty scientific articles devoted to the history of Yerevan, museology, cultural heritage, tourism, and issues of urban development. He is also a researcher at the Department of Management at the European University of Armenia.
Currently, Gevorg Orbelyan heads Yerevan History Museum. Today, the museum is developing as a modern, innovative cultural center open to international cooperation, which brings together the past, present, and future of Yerevan.
