President of the Armenia National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM Armenia), Deputy Head of the Culture and Tourism Department at Yerevan Municipality Hayk Mkrtchyan is an alumnus of the Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU).

Taking a look back, he remembers how he got interested in museum work and monument preservation beyond his will while filling out an application for admission to the ASPU in 2001. He admits that he still has interest and that every time he carries out any museum project or program, he tells himself he is so happy to be working by his profession and to have achieved success.

Hayk Mkrtchyan started pursuing his professional career right after graduating from the Armenian State Pedagogical University when he received a job offer from the History Museum of Yerevan, and this is exactly where his long and interesting journey in the enigmatic world of museums kicked off.

Since 2005, he has worked in different museums, cultural organizations and private funds and foundations in Yerevan, has held different positions, has coordinated local and international projects and has had the opportunity to tour over 3 dozen countries where he has interacted and worked with the specialists of various museums.

Hayk Mkrtchyan considers joining the Armenia National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) as one of the major achievements of his career, and it went on to become a platform for major professional achievements.

“ICOM Armenia helped launch the period of my major achievements in international cooperation when I was invited to join the ICOM International Committee for Communications, Marketing and Audience Engagement where I had the opportunity to not only work, but also learn from the specialists of experienced and prestigious organizations. One of the best stops on that road was the organizing of the “Evolving Challenges: Technology, New Millennium Generation, Controversies” international scientific conference in Yerevan,” Hayk Mkrtchyan noted.

The road to professional achievements led Hayk Mkrtchyan to the British Museum where he had the opportunity to not only undergo long training, but was also invited back to London to coordinate the annual training program organized by the British Museum (he worked at the British Museum for nearly 5 months).

From 2019 to 2021, Hayk Mkrtchyan was Assistant to the Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of the Republic of Armenia —a position that served as an exclusive opportunity for him to carry out several programs and projects.

In particular, he coordinated a number of key projects aimed at popularizing intangible and tangible cultural heritage. In this period, he had the opportunity to enrich his professional knowledge through the International Visitor Leadership Program of the U.S. Embassy, thanks to which he had professional meetings at prestigious organizations and museums of 5 States of the United States for nearly 20 days.

Between 2019 and 2023, he was provided with the opportunity to continue his education in the Department of Management and Business at the University of Sheffield and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Business.

In 2022, Hayk Mkrtchyan received an offer to test his professional potential at IDeA Foundation and, due to his job, he moved to Dilijan where he coordinated the EU-funded Karifabrika Project, which is about the harmonization of culture and business and a mega project to be carried out outside of Yerevan.

From 2024 to 2025, he worked for the Culture Development Foundation where he was Head of the International Relations Department. As an alumnus of the International Visitor Leadership Program of the U.S. Embassy, in May-June 2025, he organized the visit of the directors of 10 museums to the United States through the cooperation between the Foundation and the U.S. Embassy.
