“The Chair of Music of the Faculty of Culture was established in 1973; the founding Dean of the Faculty Karlen Mirzakhanyan had a great role in development of the Chair.
The Chair has two Departments – “Conductor of Brass-Pop Orchestra” and the “Conductor of Folk Instruments”.
In different years the Chair was conducted by the following persons:
1973 -1987- Associate Professor, USSR Honoured Art Figure, Vahagn Stamboltsyan/
1987 – 2003- Professor, USSR Honoured Art Figure Souren Abrahamyan
2003 – 2004- Associate Professor, USSR Honoured Art Figure Seyran Ohanyan
2004 – 2005- Professor, Composer, USSR Honoured Art Figure Sergey Aghajanyan
Since 2005 till now the Chair has been run by the Associate Professor, the RA Honoured Artist Ara Gevorgyan.
Throughout the many years’ activities carried out by the Chair we would like to specify the “Nairi” brass orchestra, which has an active involvement in the cultural life of our country (since 2003 the orchestra has been headed by Kolya Martirosyan- the Associate Professor of the same Chair).
- 9 May 1984, Moscow, Parade-Contest of Folk Brass Orchestras, 1st place with the right to participate in the international festival commemorating Podiveni in the city of Trenchin, Czechoslovakia. The orchestra of the Chair in question returned from the festival with a medal, first prize diploma and certificates.
- 2009-2010- International festival in Batumi, first class diploma
- 2013 –“Renaissance” international contest-festival in Gyumri- 1st prize
- 2014 – “Renaissance” international contest festival, the folk instruments orchestra received the 3rd prize (conductor Associate Professor Levon Avagyan)
2008- The folk instruments orchestra issued a CD with Armenian folk songs and melodies.
Outstanding figures of culture had been employed at the Chair throughout different years; among them were the ASSR people’s artist, Associate Professor Hakob Ter-Voskanyan, Professor, Composer Robert Petrosyan, Associate Professor Aram Ckatanyan, etc.
The RA People’s Artist, Professor, the Artistic Director of the RA Pop-Symphonic Orchestra of the Public Radio and Television Yervand Yerznkyan, Honoured Quanun player, the RA People’s Artist, Professor Hasmik Leyloyan, the RA Honoured Artist, Professor Norayr Davtyan, Professors Hrach Nazaryan (duduk), Sigizmund Nersisyan (percussion instruments), Associate Professor Sevada Shhoyan (saxophone, clarinet), and others are employed at the Chair today.
