Preparing for an earthquake: Earthquake Drills at ASPU

Khachik Shmavonyan, Lieutenant colonel of the Rescue Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and Senior Lieutenant Tatul Atalyan delivered a lecture at ASPU on March 22.

During the meeting with future psychologists, the speakers spoke about organization of emergency evacuation of the population and safety rules in the event of an earthquake.

What is evacuation and how is it organized in educational institutions? What to do and what actions to take in case of a heavy earthquake? Mr. Shmavonyan tried to give answer to all these questions.

The latter emphasized the importance of the "Civil Defense and Emergency Situations" discipline, adding that the purpose is to transfer minimum knowledge about safety and behaviour rules during earthquakes.

Senior Lieutenant Tatul Atalyan in turn dwelt on safety rules during, before and after an earthquake, the devastating consequences and causes of the Spitak earthquake.

The latter also emphasized the importance of awareness-raising campaigns, organization of frequent drills, trainings and courses in educational institutions, state and non-state organizations and expressed hope that such meetings will also have a positive result from the point of view of increasing  public awareness.

Let us add that Tatul Atalyan was involved in the relief and search-and-rescue teams that the Armenian government sent to Syria to provide humanitarian or rescue assistance following the devastating earthquake in February 2023.

At the end of the meeting, the attendees watched a film about the activity of the Armenian search-and-rescue team in Syria.
