“Social Work is a Profession”

Today, within the framework of the World Social Work Day, a conference was held at the Pedagogical University on the topic of “Social Work in Transforming Society; Development Perspectives”.

Among the participants of the conference organised by the initiative of the ASPU Chair of Sociology and Social Work and the “Social Worker, Support Centre” NGO were field specialists, representatives from various universities and schools, public organisations, lecturers and students.

The ASPU Vice-Rector Srbouhi Gevorgyan, the Dean of the Faculty of Education Psychology and Sociology, Rouzanna Petrosyan, the Head of the Chair of Sociology and Social Work Armen Sahakyan congratulated the participants on this occasion.

They assured that future social workers should not be satisfied by just receiving a score and a certificate; they should first of all realise about their professional privilege and be humanists.

During her speech, the Head of the Department of Social Support of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs Astghik Minasyan referred to the main issues of people, who are considered extremely poor, and stated that the most important for those working with such people is to have the knowledge and professionalism. Likewise, she spoke about the higher educational institutions in the country specialised in training social workers, as well as institutions conducting social work in various fields, and added that in the near future provisions of the law about social workers would be drafted to ensure everybody realised that social work was a profession.

In addition, Astghik Minasyan mentioned to the future social workers that professional path was complicated and there were always falls next to success.
“It is most important that those working with socially vulnerable people are kind in their nature and have the feeling of satisfaction, as the success in their work will also be the key to success in this field".

What is more, the Founding President of the NGO “Social Worker, Support Centre”, the first year ASPU student of the Department of Social Work of the Faculty of Education Psychology and Sociology Hasmik Buniatyan also spoke about the goals and objectives of the field. She considered the World Social Worker Day as the day of re-establishment of human values, and called the social workers supporters of kindness and the creators of light and revocation of values. Besides, the latter briefly introduced the results of her sociological research on disclosure and identification of possible issues and omissions in the process of organisation of professional courses of social work.

Likewise, various other reports were also delivered during the conference, which referred to peculiarities of professional activities of social workers, the role of social work in healthcare, social involvement of persons with disabilities, scientific development opportunities of this field in our country.

The conference was wrapped up with professional discussions.

At the end the participants thereof received certificates, as well as the premier of the song “Voice of Social Worker” was presented.
